    Poland awards DTT licences
    July 6, 2013 08.13 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The Polish National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) has granted licences to the public broadcaster TVP and Lux Veritas Foundation to operate a children’s and socio-religious channel respectively on the country’s first DTT multiplex (MUX-1).
Both companies will pay their licence fee in installments and start broadcasting once the president of the Office of Electronic Communications (UKE) issues them with frequencies.
They should be on air no later than April 28 next year.
The social-religious channel licence award is a major victory for the Lux Vertitas Foundation, which garnered huge public support, especially among the more conservative and religious sections of the population, to secure its channel TV Trwam a slot on MUX-1 that it had been previously denied.
In winning the slot, the Foundation beat off rival bids from Wieczorna.pl and Media Works, with the latter withdrawing its offer on March 5.
TVP, on the other, overcame a rival bid from Cyfrowy Polsat, which was hoping to secure a place on MUX-1 for its proprietary channel Polsat Kids.
Instead, TVP will occupy it with a new channel named TVP ABC and aimed at children aged 4-12.

DTH to lead pay-TV future in Latin America
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 06-07-2013
Nearly 100 million users will pay for TV in Latin America in 2018, according to Dataxis' latest report on television trends. These numbers will mean that 68% of the regionīs houses with televisions will have a pay-TV service and most of them will buy direct-to-home (DTH) content.
The analyst firm says that Peru, Brazil and Mexico are the countries in which more growth is expected, due to their lower development level compared with other Latin American countries. But Argentina and Colombia, together with Brazil and Mexico, will have the largest pay-TV markets by 2018, representing 87.9% of the regionīs business.
DTH services had 23.5% of the pay-TV users in 2007, a figure that rose to 47.9% in 2012. Based on this growth and on the large spread of DTH in the region, Dataxis predicts that DTH platforms will grow quickly in the next few years.
By 2018, DTH services will occupy around 60% of the market, with cable TV the second option with 29% and IPTV third with 4.5%. This last option depends on telecom networks, which are slowly developed in most of the Latin American countries.
to specific countries, the report places Brazil as the biggest pay-TV market in 2018, calculating that it could reach 45.8% of all the customers by 2018.

Spainīs pay-TV overtakes free-to-air income for the first time
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 06-07-2013
Spanish pay-TV platforms have overtaken the income of free-to-air channels for the first time, according to the annual report by Spainīs telecom authority, CMT.
The country's cable and satellite platforms lost more than 350,000 customers in 2012, but thanks to some changes in the rates and the business model, the pay-TV companies were able to increase their income by 2.5% to €1.7bn. CMT points to the rise in taxes and the drop in the number of family consumers as the main reasons behind the loss of clients.
The free-to-air DTT channels suffered losses of 17.9% compared with 2011, with an income of €1.6bn.
Despite of the lack of business opportunities in Spainīs audiovisual market, the CMT emphasises the changes experienced by the pay-TV sector. Triple play offers have been gradually overtaking the market and nowadays represent half of all pay-TV contracts.
More than 4 million people had paid for TV in Spain by the end of 2012, including services for mobile devices. Satellite is the technology with the largest number of clients and represents 41% of the market. Cable platforms have 33%, IPTV offers 9%, and DTT pay channels 7%.
Mobile TV incomes grew 14.6% and IPTV ones 11.6%, although both, as happened in the market in general, lost clients.

    TV blackout in Russia
    July 6, 2013 11.36 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

A large part of Russia has been hit by a TV blackout following a serious malfunction on the Express-MD1 satellite.
Vedomosti reports that the satellite, which has been in orbit since 2009, stopped broadcasting the channels First Channel, Rossiya 1, Kultura and Channel Five in the Central European part of Russia and Urals, home to around 117 million people.
Express-MD1, which now appears unrecoverable, developed faults a while ago and so the Russian Television and Broadcasting Network (RTRS) reserved about 80% of its capacity on satellites belonging to other companies.
As a result, the blackout was short lived for three of the channels, with 90% of the population living in its coverage area being able to receive First Channel and Rossiya 1 within an hour.
Channel Five has in large part also been restored, though there is still a problem with Kultura.
