    Autentic launches documentary channel Spark
    Jörn Krieger | 04-07-2013
Munich-based media company Autentic has launched a new documentary channel on 1 July 2013: Spark can be received on South African pay-TV platform TopTV with further markets to follow.
ZDF Enterprises, the commercial arm of German public broadcaster ZDF, has been won as the main partner for content supply. The 24 hour service which targets the whole family is distributed in standard resolution and in high definition (HDTV). The schedule comprises documentaries covering science, technology and the future, nature and biology, history, travel, archaeology and adventure.
At TopTV, Spark replaces nature channel Top Explore which was also operated by Autentic. As the next step, Autentic wants to roll out the channel in Asia and Eastern Europe.
"Spark is the new brand for our existing documentary channel Top Explore," said Ian Woodrow, vice-president channels at TopTV. "Subscribers will still see many of the programmes which they have enjoyed on Top Explore in the past, but will also be impressed with the new programming that has been secured for the channel. It is the next development in this genre of informative and knowledge-based programming from Autentic."
Autentic distributes documentaries and operates thematic channels, for example Spiegel Geschichte and Spiegel TV Wissen in Germany and Austria as well as several channels at TopTV in South Africa.

Arab Idol finale watched by 40% of UAE population
    Rebecca Hawkes | 04-07-2013
Two out of three Emirati and other Arabs living in the UAE watched Palestinian singer Mohammed Assaf win the second season of Arab Idol, according to TV audience figures compiled by tview.
The reality TV talent series attracted a peak viewership of 411,000 - up from 390,000 on the top figures from the first edition of Arab Idol - creating a new record since the launch of the UAE’s TV audience measurement survey tview, operated by EMMC.
The finale was transmitted simultaneously on MBC Masr and Al Hayat, with the average audience share on MBC1 reaching 40% of the UAE population. This, said a statement from tview, is “more than double the average viewership a British free to air channel can attract” when airing a show in a similar genre.
EMMC is a joint venture between Abu Dhabi Media, Sharjah Media, Rotana Media and Etisalat, and is also supported by du. It is the result of a UAE cabinet initiative, led by the National Media Council and the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority.
Using people meters, the tview panel data includes detailed demographic information such as nationality, gender, location, age and socio-economic status for viewers aged four and over, although all data is reported anonymously and individuals are not identified.
Arab Idol 2 was watched across the Middle East and North Africa, with MBC believing that around 100 million viewers tuned in to watch Assaf – who grew up in a refugee camp – be crowned the region's latest pop idol.

BBC defies doubters with Wimbledon semis, finals in 3D
    Joseph O'Halloran | 04-07-2013
With perhaps a silent thanks to Andy Murray, the BBC has announced plans to broadcast the dénouement to this year’s Wimbledon tennis championships live in 3D to homes across the UK.
The move flies in the face of the general perception that 3D has failed as a platform—only weeks ago ESPN confirmed that it would discontinue its 3DTV service by the end of 2013 due to limited viewer adoption—but undimmed, the BBC says that it will continues its two-year trial experimenting with 3D production and distribution by broadcasting in 3D the Ladies’ Singles semi-finals, the Gentlemen’s Singles semi-finals, the Ladies’ Singles final and the Gentlemen’s Singles final.
The 3D coverage, transmitted on a free-to-air basis, will be available to those with access to a 3DTV set and to the BBC’s HD Red Button service which can be accessed from Freeview HD, Virgin Media, Freesat and YouView.
Commenting on the move, Kim Shillinglaw, Head of BBC 3D, said: “We’re delighted to provide live 3D coverage from the biggest matches of this year’s Wimbledon. Major UK sporting events are a big part of our trials with 3D content and this allows us to build on our work from previous Wimbledon Championships and the London 2012 Olympics.”
“We are always looking at ways to improve the Wimbledon experience and the 3D TV trials will allow us to do that by exploring the boundaries of live sporting television,” added Mick Desmond, Commercial Director of the All England Club.

Fox keeps the lead among Spain´s pay-TV channels
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 04-07-2013
With 5.3% of the pay-TV audience, Fox continues topping the figures in Spain, thanks to its 800,000 loyal viewers.
According to Barlovento Comunicacion audience´s report, Fox increased its number of viewers in June, and is followed closely by TNT, which saw significant growth last month and jumped from fourth to second position in the rankings.
But the greatest audiences are still in front of the free DTT channels. Apart from the tight competition on the top between Telecinco and Antena 3, some of the smaller channels have gained some stability and confirm its successful model.
Xplora, Discovery Max and Paramount Channel reached their highest numbers in June and are closer to the top among the themed channels, of which first place is occupied by Mediaset´s FDF.
The public channels Clan and Boing are still keeping a tight fight for the kids audience. Boing has from July the exclusive rights for DTT of Cartoon Network content, which is expected to give it a great advantage.
Among the general DTT channels, the only difference from the previous months is the 0.6% growth of Mediaset´s Cuatro, which placed the channel above La Sexta for the first time in the past year.

Free-to-air drops viewers to pay-TV in Argentina
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 04-07-2013
The first half of 2013 is continuing the trend already noted in 2012 in Argentina: free-to-air TV is gradually losing viewers.
According to a report from LAMAC, the Latin American advertisment council, and the website television.com.ar, every month of 2013 has been below 2012´s average.
The first six months ended with almost 4 percentage points less than by the end of 2012. In June, 29.4% of Argentinians chose to watch free-to-air TV, compared with 34% in the same month of 2012.
However, the pay-TV platforms have experienced significant growth of customers during Q1 and Q2. According to LAMAC´s report, 99% of Argentinians have access to some pay-TV channels and 79% watch them every day. This means a growth of 7 percentage points compared with 2012 and places Argentina as the biggest pay-TV consumer in Latin America.
The report also points to online TV, live streaming and VOD content through the Internet as the tendency for the future. The IPTV platforms, as Movistar TV, are already competing at the same level as cable companies.
The wider content offered by the new platforms is making the concurrence more difficult for free-to-air channels, although they have still a great community of viewers.

New MENA VP, Dubai training centre for Harris Broadcast
    Rebecca Hawkes | 04-07-2013
Harris Broadcast is extending its Middle East headquarters to provide a new demonstration and training academy for broadcast engineers and operators.
The news comes as the company also unveiled Alain Pecot as its new vice president for the Middle East and Africa.
Previously Pecot was Harris Broadcast’s regional director for southern Europe, and vice president, transmission systems in Europe and Africa - having worked for Sony and Thomson before that.
“Everyone taking on a challenging new job says that they are looking forward to working in a growing market. In this case, I see that the timing is perfect,” said Pecot. “Across the region developments are taking place in waves, with much of Africa still in the transition from analogue to digital, while some of the countries in the Middle East now see a much more competitive media marketplace calling for enhanced workflows.
“What draws it all together is the need for a single, trusted source of advanced technologies, and that is where Harris Broadcast and its deep commitment to the region plays its strongest card,” he added.
The company’s new facility in Dubai Media City will include an integrated demonstration room and fully equipped training centre, and allow customers, systems integrators, and resellers to gain hands on experience of Harris Broadcast equipment. Staff at TV stations in the region can also be easily trained up on any newly introduced products and see how they integrate into specific workflows, says the company.
“Broadcasters and production facilities turn to Harris Broadcast to provide a complete solution, embracing technology, training and support,” said Richard Scott, senior vice president, global sales and services at Harris Broadcast.

“Expanding our presence with this facility enables us to develop even closer relationships with our customers as well as their engineering and operational teams, so that we continue to deliver the best-in-class solutions to meet their business needs.”
