    UPC cablecom buys Carouge cablenet
    July 3, 2013 17.46 Europe/London By Robert Briel

The city of Carouge in the canton of Geneva has sold its 51% share in Télécarouge SA to UPC cablecom.
Liberty Global’s UPC cablecom already held a 45% share in Télécarouge, which serves 8,000 homes.
Nicolas Walder, member of Carouge City Council, is happy about this decision: “UPC cablecom already has experience of managing Télécarouge, and thanks to its expert knowledge we are ensuring the long-term sustainability of our cable network. Customers stand to benefit from simplified offers and first-rate products and services.”
By completely taking over Carouge’s cable network, UPC cablecom is expanding its footprint and enhancing its market position in French-speaking Switzerland.
Last year, the company took over Télémeyrin SA. Geneva City Parliament has approved a purchase agreement between the city of Geneva and upc cablecom concerning Geneva’s cable network. A referendum has been called and, if it takes place, voters will decide on the matter within the next year.

60 million euros in savings for Canal +

    2013-07-01

Canal + / CanalSat in France decided to suspend shipments magazine subscribers. This is to give him 60 million euros (about 260 million zł) savings ... month, gives "Les Echos". Magazine called "Plus" has been replaced by an electronic version. Post office in France, "La Poste" is not, in turn, pleased with this turn of events, as shipping magazine "Plus" represented 0.6% of its revenue.

In Poland, Canal + / Cyfra + print magazine issued to subscribers for quite some time. Until it was abandoned in March 2011, introducing Internet ICA. Platform n supposedly tried on the issue of magazine subscribers, but eventually abandoned the idea because the costs were too high. Cyfrowy Polsat ship the own store, but with time limited circulation and shipping only to the subscribers, and eventually completely abandon it. This resulted mainly from a large number of subscribers (3.5 million) - the cost of printing and logistics are then much higher than for other platforms in Poland. There was no effect in the ad, so I abandoned the print magazine subscribers of Cyfrowy Polsat.

It is no wonder that the French Canal + / CanalSat resigns from stock subscribers.

Heavy fine for Swedish TV pirate
    July 4, 2013 09.04 Europe/London By Julian Clover

A Swedish man has been ordered to pay SEK 12 million in damages to four pay-TV companies after been founding guilty of possession of pirate TV decoders.
The 43-year-old from Norrköping in the east of the country at one time had over 650 customers to the illegal service that pirated signals from Canal Digital, Viasat, Boxer and Com Hem.
The court was told the operation began in 2004 and was run jointly from the defendant’s own flat and that of a neighbour. The operation was built up over time, partnering with other pirate operations, and channeling funds through a bank account belonging to his mother.
He was discovered in 2008, when his flat was raided in connection with a separate case, and police noticed the high number of computers in the building.
The man only escaped jail because of the amount of time taken by police to process the case.
It is the second significant fine for TV piracy in recent weeks following a separate case where the defendant was fined SEK 37 million.

    Volia looks to expand
    July 4, 2013 09.01 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The leading Ukrainian cableco Volia has 20-30 smaller operators in its sights, according Gyorgy Zsembery, the company’s CEO.
Speaking to Forbes, he added that there are currently over 300 cable operators in Ukraine with a market share of less than 1% and the market cannot survive without growth, which will require serious investment.
In Volia’s case, it plans to grow by both expanding its network and through acquisitions.
On the other hand, while consolidation is inevitable, Volia has no intention of paying inflated prices, though it expects to close a few deals in the coming months.
Zsembery added that Volia plans to invest UAH300 million (€27.9 million) in 2013, up from the UAH200 million it has done annually for the last eight years.
He also said that Volia will aggressively pursue its goal of being in the forefront of OTT in Ukraine.
At present there are some 80 companies in the country either trying or having tried to offer IP-based (IPTV or OTT) services, though most have ben technically deficient and virtually none have shown world-class content.

Turkish DTH consolidation on the horizon
    July 4, 2013 07.56 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

A major deal in Turkey’s pay-TV industry could be in the offing, with D-Smart signaling its intention to buy the rival platform Digitürk.
According to Zaman, D-Smart, which is owned by the Dogan Media Group, said in an emailed note that it plans to “offer relatively better service with favourable prices” to Digitürk customers.
Digitürk was part of the Cukurova Group up until this May, when The Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF), seized it along with several assets including Show TV and Skytürk, for failing to control its debts. Following the seizure of Digitürk, several companies, including Providence Equity Partners and the Canal+ group, emerged as possible buyers.
Indeed, Providence had until that point held a 47% stake in the platform, with the Cukurova Group being the majority shareholder.
Digitürk has particularly strong sports coverage, having paid TL321 million (€127.3 million) for four-year broadcasting rights to the Turkish Super League (football) earlier this year, though it has recently also added significantly to its line-up of popular local and international TV channels.
Should D-Smart take over Digitürk, it would create a DTH platform with between 4-5 million subscribers.
Any deal would have to be sanctioned by Turkey’s Competition Board (RK), which as recently as late last month gave the go-ahead to another major transaction that saw Show TV sold to the Ciner Group.

Proton failure delays Astra 2E launch
    July 4, 2013 07.47 Europe/London By Robert Briel

The launch of the Astra 2E satellite scheduled for July 21 is postponed pending investigation into the recent failed Proton launch.
The launch of the Astra satellite is contracted to International Launch Services (ILS), who is he exclusive partner for the commercial Proton launches.
On July 2, the launch of the Proton M/Block DM-03 mission with three Glonass navigational satellites for the Russian Federal Government resulted in a failure. About ten seconds after lift-off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, the rocket veered off of its flight path and returned to earth.
The Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) has set up a special commission to determine the cause of the failure and telemetry is currently being amassed and processed. This government launch was not managed by ILS.
Following the commission’s findings, ILS will conduct its own Failure Review Oversight Board (FROB). The FROB will review the commission’s findings and corrective action plan, in accordance with U.S. and Russian government export control regulations. The FROB will include representatives from ILS customers, insurance underwriters and technical experts from the industry.

    Spanish market feels the pinch
    July 4, 2013 09.52 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Growth in the mobile broadband sector, including smartphones, tablets and datacards, failed to offset a general contraction in Spain’s telecom market in 2012.
According to the regulator CMT, the economic crisis and general reductions in prices saw the market’s revenues fall by 7.2%, with the mobile telephony (-15.9%) being the hardest hit. In the case of the fixed broadband sector, revenues fell by 4.6% to €3,659 million.
Total investment by operators exceeded €4,000 million but was 8.9% down on the previous year, while direct employment in the telecom industry shrunk by 10.7%.
Significantly, expenditure on double play packages (broadband and voice), received by 7.7 million subscribers, fell by 6.9% in 2012 to a monthly average of €35 a month.
At the same time, the number of quad and quintuple subscriptions at year’s end stood at over 1.2 million.
The number of homes with access to DOCSIS 3.0 exceeded 9.6 million, while and 3.2 million had access to FTHH.
Of these, 336,719 were active, almost double the number in 2011.
