Cyfrowy Polsat has signed an agreement with NBCUniversal Television Distribution for the distribution of hit movies on Cyfrowy Polsat’s VOD service and internet platform ipla.
It involves dozens of titles from NBCUniversal’s library, along with all new productions, with one of the first to be made available being Les Miserables.
This is the third VOD agreement the Polish company has secured with Hollywood majors, the others being with Disney and Warner Bros.
Cyfrowy Polsat’s VOD service is available to all the platform’s subscribers with a HD receiver and movies are offered on a rotational basis on 20 satellite channels, with new titles being added each week.
Meanwhile ipla is available via ipla.tv, dedicated apps on devices using Windows and selected smart TVs (Panasonic, Samsung, LG and Philips), though only to viewers in Poland.

Ericsson to acquire Red Bee Media
    July 1, 2013 08.44 Europe/London By Julian Clover
Ericsson has made another big stride into the media services sector with the announcement that it is to acquire Red Bee Media.
The former BBC Broadcast division has 1,500 staff in the UK and Australia. It was spun off from the BBC in 2005 and bought by a Macquarie-backed venture, specially established for the acquisition.
“Ericsson is making a step change to our business, cementing our commitment to TV and broadcast services and continuing a journey we started in 2007,” says Magnus Mandersson, executive vice president and head of Business Unit Global Services, Ericsson. “We can create value for broadcasters by making digital content more accessible, enabling monetization of TV content more efficiently. Video traffic shows very strong uptake in the mobile networks and Ericsson can address the need of both broadcasters and telecom operators through our technology expertise and services capabilities.”
Red Bee maintains contracts with the BBC, as well as providing services for companies including Canal+, Chellomedia and Channel 4, amongst others. There are also facilities in France, Germany, Spain.
The company runs media asset management to playout and digital video publishing, metadata services, multilingual access services and creative services to major broadcasters and broadband platforms. Red Bee Media is also the largest editorial metadata provider in Europe, delivers more than 100,000 hours of subtitling per year for leading broadcasters.
Ericsson has been gradually building its interest in media services. Last year it acquired the Technicolor playout business for €19 million, having previously secured the TV4 facility in Stockholm.

Nokia to fully acquire Siemens’ stake in NSN
    July 1, 2013 07.48 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Nokia Corporation and Siemens have entered into a definitive agreement for Nokia to acquire Siemens’ entire 50% stake in their joint venture, Nokia Siemens Networks.
The purchase price for Siemens’ stake is EUR1.7 billion and the transaction is expected to close during the third calendar quarter of 2013. Upon closing of the planned acquisition, Nokia Siemens Networks will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Nokia.
Stephen Elop, President and CEO of Nokia, commented: “With its clear strategic focus and strong leadership team, Nokia Siemens Networks has structurally improved its operational and financial performance. Furthermore, Nokia Siemens Networks has established a clear leadership position in LTE, which provides an attractive growth opportunity. Nokia is pleased with these developments and looks forward to continue supporting these efforts to create more shareholder value for the Nokia group.”
Joe Kaeser, Siemens CFO, commented: “With this transaction, we continue our efforts to strengthen our focus on Siemens’ Core areas of Energy management, Industry and Infrastructure as well as Healthcare. The full acquisition of Nokia Siemens Networks by Nokia offers an attractive opportunity to actively shape the telecom equipment market for the future and create sustainable value.”
Nokia Siemens Networks was established on April 1, 2007, as a joint venture combining Nokia’s Networks Business Group and Siemens’ carrier-related operations for fixed and mobile networks.
Nokia plans to retain the existing management and governance structure at Nokia Siemens Networks, with Rajeev Suri continuing as CEO and Jesper Ovesen continuing as Executive Chairman of the Nokia Siemens Networks Board of Directors, which will adjust to the changing ownership structure.
Nokia Siemens Networks’ operational headquarters will remain in Espoo, Finland, and the company will continue to have a strong regional presence in Germany, including its major hub in Munich. Nokia supports the current management plan, including the already in-progress Nokia Siemens Networks restructuring plan that remains unchanged as a result of this announcement.
In accordance with this transaction, the Siemens name will be phased out from Nokia Siemens Networks’ company name and branding. Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks plan to confirm the new name and brand at the closing of the transaction.
The purchase price totals EUR1.7 billion, of which EUR1.2 billion will be paid in cash at the closing of the transaction. The balance of EUR0.5 billion will be paid in the form of a secured loan from Siemens due one year from closing. Nokia has obtained committed bank financing for the EUR 1.2 billion cash portion.

Elemental inks Teleste deal, gives progress report
    June 30, 2013 23.33 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul
Elemental Technologies has entered into a partnership with Teleste.
Under it, the company will power the Teleste Optimo OTT solution, which is a complete multiscreen solution for managing and distributing TV channels, interactive services on DVB, IPTV and OTT networks.
It also provides content creation to set-top boxes, tablets, PCs and smartphones.
Speaking at a press event in London, Keith Wymbs, VP of marketing for Elemental, said that the company had until now not had a high focus on cable, concentrating instead on IPTV.
However, the formalisation of the channel partnership with Teleste marks its entry into the cable market in Europe.
Commenting on other developments, Wymbs said that in the few short weeks since NAB, where Elemental debuted 4K H.264, it has advanced its HEVC software codec implementation to support 4K/H.265.
He also said that following its demonstration of live processing of 1080P HEVC at 3.2 Mbps, Elemental has announced that its technology has since advanced to enable 1080P HEVC at below 2.8 Mbps.
The company believes it is innovating faster than anyone in the industry and has made HEVC available to any customer that wants to license it.
Wymbs also said that its Cloud PaaS has already been deployed on three continents. In addition, he said that Elemental is not a hardware but “completely a software company.”

Canal Panda launches its first production
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 01-07-2013
Canal Panda continues to grow and strengthen its position among the children's pay-TV audience with the release of the channel's first self-produced show and its launch on cable platform Euskaltel.
Chello Multicanal's channel is today premiering Panda & Nico, a show which focused on teaching children how to eat in a balanced way. The show looks to interact with parents and children through food, science and easy games which can be also done at home.
Since Cartoon Network and Cartoonito recently left the pay-TV platforms, the rest of the children's channels have been fighting to take their place. Currently Boing, which is broadcast through DTT and exclusively premieres Turner content, has the top audience figures.
Canal Panda has also started to be broadcast on Euskaltel this weekend, taking the slot left by Cartoon Network. Chello's channel is now available on Canal+, ONO, Movistar TV and the main local cable platforms. Panda, which started airing two years ago, has also been live streaming its whole schedule since April.

DirecTV prepares interactive and multiscreen broadcast of Brazil 2014
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 01-07-2013
The Confederations Cup is over and the countdown to the football World Cup next summer has begun, and DirecTV has already announced wide coverage of the event with HD, interactive and multiscreen programming.
DirecTV will broadcast the 64 matches of the final round of the tournament for the whole of Latin America. The company has been gaining experience by broadcasting the whole Confederations Cup event, and from some of the same venues where the World Cup will be played.
DirecTV has been covering the World Cup since France 1998 and for Brazil new TV technologies will play an important role. For an event which is supposed to be the first to be partially broadcast in 4K, DirecTV has announced full HD coverage plus an interactive channel with only football programming and a multiscreen option to see the matches from different views at the same time. Moreover, all the channels will offer some kind of World Cup programming, with pre and post reports, live information and correspondents at every stadium and training place.
The company is clearly focusing on sports to keep its leading position among Latin America's pay-TV platforms. "Our programming is designed for sports fans. We bring them a unique schedule with the best competitions worldwide," said Gillermo Barretto, programming director of DirecTV for Latin America. The platform will also broadcast the Premier League and La Liga from September, as well as the NBA and FIBA programming and the ATP and WTA tennis tournaments.

New Intel chief expresses doubts at TV strategy
    Editor | 01-07-2013
Intel's imminent arrival into the TV industry, which some feel may change the competitive nature of the pay-TV market, has been questioned by none other than its own new chief executive.
According to reports in the Financial Times, Brian Krzanich, in his first media briefing, conceded that even though the chip giant had fundamentally created a "game-changing device," it lacked experience in what he described as the most important aspect of the TV business: content.
"In the end, it's about content," Krzanich told assembled journalists. "We are not good content players and we do not have a good content user base right now."
This deficiency, Krzanich added, left him cautious about whether to proceed with a TV play based on an Intel set-top box offering access to over-the-top services in a project headed by former BBC iPlayer chief Eric Huggers.
In his briefing Krzanich stated that Intel would refocus on the company's core strengths in manufacturing while looking to address the smartphone and tablet markets which hitherto it had largely ignored.

NTT Plala taps Verimatrix for mobile video content security
    Michelle Clancy | 01-07-2013
Japanese ISP NTT Plala is tapping the Verimatrix Video Content Authority System (VCAS) solution for content security for the Hikari-TV mobile video service, through a partnership with Alfredcore.
The Hikari-TV mobile video service for smartphones offers 93 live coverage channels, more than 30,000 video-on-demand (VOD) titles and about 30,000 karaoke titles.
"This is a very exciting deployment for Verimatrix as it represents a significant new VCAS for Internet TV deployment in Japan," said Steve Oetegenn, chief sales and marketing officer at Verimatrix. "Alfredcore is an important part of our partner ecosystem, and we are delighted that NTT Plala has achieved many benefits as a result of deploying our best-of-breed, advanced solution. We anticipate additional opportunities for collaboration in the future across the important Asia Pacific region."
In addition to deploying Verimatrix VCAS, NTT Plala will use the ALFSTREAM head-end offered by Alfredcore, a Japanese cloud computing system provider.

    Pivotshare launches Elite MMA channel
    Parent Category: News | 01-07-2013
Pivotshare is gearing up to launch the Elite MMA fighting channel for online and mobile video, featuring UFC heavyweight worldwide champion Bas Rutten, who has won the Japanese fighting contest King of Pancrase three times.
The channel will be the company's first foray into offering branded apps as part of its Customization Services programme for chosen publishers. The apps will push Pivotshare video content to smartphones or tablets. The free apps can be downloaded from iTunes and the Google Play store. Pivotshare will also provide customised URLs along with a white-labelled variant of the platform.
"I have over ten years of video material that was all over the map," Rutten said. "I wanted a single place where my fans could subscribe and watch everything I've ever done. Pivotshare made that happen. I'm excited that my friends around the world can now come to my very own channel and watch El Guapo give a few liver shots and maybe pick up some new skills with my fight training. And my own app might even look prettier than me."
Rutten's extensive catalogue of MMA fights, martial arts training videos and his bar-fighting classic, Bas Rutten's Lethal Self Defense, can be viewed on the Elite MMA channel, which costs $4.99 per month.
"From day one we wanted to set ourselves apart by offering content owners and publishers a platform where their brand could shine," said Adam Mosam, founder at Pivotshare. "We really want them to feel like they truly have ownership of their online property. This is their brand, their content, and all under their control."
