    Russia annuls DTT tender
    June 27, 2013 07.15 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Russia’s Federal Antimonopoly Office (FAS) has blocked a DTT tender organised by the Russian Television and Radio Broadcasting Network (RTRS).
Vedomosti reports that this follows complaints about the tender, the results of which were announced on June 11, directed at the Italian companies System Engineering Solutions and Screen Service Broadcasting Technologies, working with the Russian firms NTC (Kosmos) and SFK Sistema’s daughter company RTI.
RTRS apparently committed irregularities in the evaluation, comparison and selection of the winner – a company named TD Communications Engineering – though the FAS did not provide any details.
The tender was announced in early May and was for the construction, delivery and placing into operation of 4,956 transmitters that will distribute the second multiplex.
This will carry 10 channels, including Ren TV, CTC, Domashny, Sport and Muz TV.
Although TD Communications Engineering placed the highest bid (R14.58 billion – €339.5 million), the result was not based solely on this and took into account such factors as experience and the range of services that the winner could offer.
It is at this stage unclear as to how long this annulment will hold back the launch of the second multiplex and Russia’s transition to digital broadcasting.

Viacom appoints new non-US head for MTV-branded channels
    Editor | 27-06-2013
As it looks to expand outside of its domestic market, Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) has promoted Kerry Taylor to take lead responsibility for the MTV brand internationally.
In her new role as senior vice president, youth & music for VIMN, Taylor will oversee non-music-related programming and content development for all MTV-branded channels and services outside the US. She will also take the lead in deciding how the MTV brand is positioned and presented, as well as in developing original programmes and identifying acquisitions.
As senior vice president and general manager for all MTV branded channels managed out of the UK, Taylor has had creative oversight of the world’s leading youth entertainment brand in territories including the UK, Russia, Australia and Hungary. She has managed commissioning, acquisition, marketing and communications, talent and artist relations and production across MTV’s portfolio of channels, encompassing MTV, MTV+1, MTV Base, MTV Classic, MTV Dance, MTV Hits, MTV Music, MTV Live HD, MTV Rocks, Viva and VH1.
The new exec will report directly to Bob Bakish, president and chief executive officer of VIMN, who, commenting on the deal, said: “MTV remains the world’s leading youth entertainment brand with the capacity to reinvent itself for every new generation. As one of the most highly respected brand and content strategists in the business, Kerry can help guide MTV to new heights internationally.
"She has led our MTV portfolio in the UK to so many noteworthy accomplishments and I’m confident that, under her leadership, we will continue the successful evolution of the MTV brand and to deliver entertaining and compelling content to MTV viewers around the world.”
Indeed Taylor has been tasked to work closely with MTV’s international lines of business and strategic departments including ad sales, communications, creative, digital media, marketing, talent and music, and social responsibility, to ensure, says VIMN, that MTV’s brand and content “resonates” with target audiences around the world and delivers value to clients and partners.

Vodafone may be eyeing Spain's ONO
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 27-06-2013
Vodafone is working on strengthening its position in the telecoms sector, and after buying Kabel Deutschland could be now interested in purchasing Spain´s cable company ONO, according to ADSLZone and Xakata.
ONO provides cable TV, Internet and fixed telephone services, and has the most users among Spanish cable companies. The increasing importance of convergent offers has forced Vodafone into the background, with particular competition coming from Movistar, whose Movistar Fusion has been successful over the last months.
By buying ONO, Vodafone would have access to a wide fibre network and a stable number of clients, two features which would make it a leader in the sector.
But the decision is far from being made. Vodafone Spain is also focusing on its LTE network and plans to cover over 80% of the country with 4G by the end of summer, but would need more slots in the spectrum to reach 100%. The Government plans to free up more radioelectric space by closing DTT signals, and if it acts soon Vodafone may prefer to concentrate on the LTE market rather than making an expensive acquisition such as ONO.

Argentina leads TV format exports in Latin America
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 27-06-2013
Argentina is the largest exporter of TV formats among Latin American countries, according to the Format Recognition and Protection Association (FRAPA), which provides protection and information for audiovisual producers and distributors.
Argentina has sold 28 different programme formats since 2004, which are shown all around the world.
In the international ranking, Argentina is only surpassed by England (148 exports), the US (87) and the Netherlands (35). Among the most popular formats are soap operas and series, such as Chiquitas, Rebelde Way and Teen Angels.
The largest buyer of Argentinian productions, according to FRAPA, is Mexico, where Hermanos y Detectives and Los Roldan have been broadcast. Some Argentinian productions have even been adapted for Mexican audiences.
However, the business isn't only flowing one-way; Argentina also buys and broadcasts content from other countries, especially reality shows. Sońando por Bailar, a format from Mexico's Televisa, has become, according to NexTV, one of the most watched shows in Argentina over the past few years.

Disney Channel soars to ratings high
    Michelle Clancy | 27-06-2013
Disney Channel is on an upswing, this week claiming the title of cable TV's No 1 total day network for the third week in a row. For 17-23June, it also swept major kids' demos for the fourth straight week.
Likely driven in part by older kids being out of school for summer vacation, the recent success places Disney Channel at a five-month high in total viewers, two to 11s and six to 11s, and a ten-month high in tweens.
In terms of specific programing, Sunday's Shake It Up has hit a three-month high and is the No 1 TV telecast across kids and tweens. The Disney Junior block also delivered the top three cable TV telecasts for kids aged two to five with Doc McStuffins, Sofia the First and Jake and the Never Land Pirates.
The 24-hour Disney Junior Channel stood as cable TV's No 1 preschool-dedicated network in total day for the 12th straight week with kids aged two to five and boys two to five, and for the 11th time in the previous 12 weeks in total viewers (354,000). Additionally, the channel set a five-week high in kids aged two to five and delivered its second-most-watched week since becoming publicly rated in girls aged two to five since weeks of 5 March 13 and 4 January 13, respectively.

RTL takes strategic investment in BroadbandTV
    Parent Category: News | 27-06-2013
European entertainment network RTL Group has formed a strategic partnership with Vancouver-based online video company BroadbandTV to create a new platform for RTL Group's digital strategy.
The arrangement is underpinned by RTL Group's initial investment of $36 million — part of a planned series of investments in the company.
Founded in 2005, BroadbandTV first entered the online video market with a solution for helping large media organisations detect videos which had been uploaded by fans on YouTube. BroadbandTV has since expanded its portfolio to include tools for the management, optimisation, protection and monetisation of video content, and its target audiences now include media companies, content creators and advertisers.
BroadbandTV also works with more than 7,800 independent channel partners through its network brands VISO and TGN. The number of video views to BroadbandTV sites grew by 169% year-on-year, reaching 2.1 billion views in the first quarter of 2013 alone.
"As the leading European entertainment network, RTL Group is committed to becoming a major player in all segments of the rapidly growing online video market, and is ideally positioned to do so," said Guillaume de Posch, co-CEO of RTL Group. "Our major broadcasters have built leading catch-up TV services, while RTL Group's global content arm, FremantleMedia, has become the highest-rated TV producer on YouTube, with 135 channels currently generating 400 million video views per month. Today, we are delighted to announce a partnership with BroadbandTV and Shahrzad Rafati that will further our development. Broadband TV is one of the most innovative companies in the YouTube ecosystem. RTL Group's track record of allowing our businesses to be run autonomously by entrepreneurs means that BroadbandTV can maintain its culture and flexibility, while benefiting from our strong investment and partnership to drive continued growth."
Following the transaction, RTL Group holds a 51% shareholding in BroadbandTV. In addition, RTL Group will appoint three members to the Board of BroadbandTV. RTL Group's operations and BroadbandTV will explore joint business opportunities in areas such as development of original content and advertising sales, further strengthening RTL Group's position in the online video market

Telemundo's popular Hispanic programme, Buenos Dias Nueva York, is getting a facelift with a new set and an extension of its run to two hours (5am-7am).
Telemundo is also adding a new co-anchor, Frederick Martinez, better known as 'El Pachá', not only to Buenos Dias Nueva York but also Acceso Total.
A veteran host, Martínez will combine his dynamic and colourful personality with Telemundo NY's decorated on-air talent such as Odalys Molina and Nathalia Ortíz (entertainment news), Allan Villafańa (specializing in breaking news) and Elliot Sáenz (traffic and weather).
El Pachá will also co-host Acceso Total with Molina, delivering the latest news in movies, music, and entertainment from Monday to Friday at 10am.
"With the changes we are implementing and the addition of El Pachá, our objective is to create a better option in morning television for the Hispanic audience," said Jose Morales, vice president of content at WNJU, the local New York Telemundo affiliate. "Viewers of Buenos Dias Nueva York and Acceso Total will not only be the first to know what's happening in their community, but will also know the causes and results first hand."
