CTH takes Red Bull action sports to Thailand
    Jörn Krieger | 21-06-2013
Thai cable TV association CTH has secured an action sports rights package from Austrian content provider Red Bull Media House for distribution on its digital TV platform.
The agreement includes programming such as the Red Bull X-Fighters, Red Bull Rampage and Red Bull Cliff Diving world series events, shows covering skateboarding, mountain biking, video gaming, music, culture, surfing and adventure racing as well as portraits of well-known sports figures like Thierry Henry, Sebastian Vettel and Felix Baumgartner.
CTH was founded by cable operators in August 2009 as an organisation to gather content for its member companies for distribution through a single unified platform. At present, CTH consists of around 200 local cable TV operators reaching over 2.5 million households throughout Thailand.
The Red Bull Media House deal follows this spring's announcement that CTH has acquired the rights to broadcast the UK Premier League games for the 2013-2015 period.

Freesat score hat trick at business awards
    Editor | 21-06-2013
It may not emerge that often from the shadow of the pay-TV behemoth in the UK satellite arena, but this is the moment for Freesat which is celebrating winning three awards at the 2013 Independent Business Awards.
The subscription-free satellite TV service has to date sold over 3.2 million units, and offers more than 150 TV, radio and interactive channels including free HD services from ITV, the BBC and Channel 4, Freesat+ to record, pause and rewind, BBC iPlayer and ITV.
It has now, for the third time in row, won the Best Training Team for Consumer Electronics accolade and the launch of Freesat's next generation service was awarded Best Consumer Advertising campaign. The award of UK Special representative was given to Freesat training team member Daniel Ernest for his advice and support to the team.
Commented Emma Scott, Freesat managing director: "We're absolutely delighted and incredibly proud to win these awards yet again. It's been a great year for Freesat, and this recognition highlights the fantastic work of the whole team. The success of the training team in particular, assisted through our partnership with Astra, is a display of our ongoing commitment to the independent retail sector that has been instrumental to our success over the last five years."

TVNZ scores TV rights for English Premier League
    Louise Duffy | 21-06-2013
TVNZ has signed a deal with Coliseum Sports Media to show the English Premier League next season, with the majority of matches to be broadcast online.
The deal will see Coliseum showing the entire competition online and TVNZ showing selected matches and weekly highlights on air. Broadcast details are still being finalised and will be publicised in coming weeks.
TV ONE will present a match of the week every Sunday from the start of the season, which kicks off on 17 August. The channel will also broadcast an hour-long highlights show on Monday nights.
Jeff Latch, TVNZ’s head of TV ONE and TV2, said he was thrilled to bring the premiership back to TV ONE screens after a gap of many years.
“We’re excited to be working with Coliseum to give TV viewers a chance to see the world’s most watched and closely followed football competition. We know football fans are passionate supporters of the beautiful game," he said. “These are exciting times to be in the media business and this is a fascinating development for premium sports content that we expect to be welcomed by New Zealand viewers.”

Vietnam’s pay-TV situation vastly improved, says CASBAA
    Louise Duffy | 21-06-2013
Vietnam's pay-TV situation has vastly improved, according to a CASBAA spokesman. Following a period of confusion after new pay-TV regulations came into force on 15 May, most international TV channels have been restored to all pay-TV platforms in Vietnam (subject to appropriate commercial contracts and operational arrangements).
John Medeiros, CASBAA's chief policy officer, said: "The situation with respect to availability of international TV channels in Vietnam has vastly improved." Medeiros observed that "after the initial period of confusion, the Vietnamese Government made clear that it did not want to see foreign TV channels (and specifically not the international news channels) dropped from the country's pay-TV systems. This positive and welcome intervention from the top levels of the Government has made a real difference. The translation requirement for live news channels has been removed; we further understand that the remaining difficulties affecting the news channels are now being ironed out in negotiations between them and their distribution partners, and also that a substantial number of additional international channel licenses for entertainment channels have been issued since 15 May with more on the way."
Medeiros noted that a number of provisions of the pay-TV regulations remain to be implemented, and said: "Going forward, it will be important to make sure that the Government's positive policy is consistently carried out by all ministries and agencies (and is not reversed in the future), especially since a number of core international channels are still awaiting licences."
But the overall message remains very healthy, Medeiros said: "Vietnam has made it clear that it continues to be open to trade and investment, and that it intends to be an active and constructive player in the Southeast Asian economic area, and this is a very good thing." He concluded: "CASBAA is pleased and grateful that the Government has taken into serious consideration our expressions of concern and recommendations for solving these implementation problems related to the new pay-TV regulations."

Disney XD repositioned for younger children
    Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 21-06-2013
In September, Walt Disney Company France will reposition its boys-targeted channel Disney XD to the six to nine-year-old demographic instead of the six to 14.
Disney wants to address the "natural target" of its channel, which is watched by one million children every month.
In France, the group doesn't only duplicate the US model but also adapts to accommodate the viewing habits of French kids.
In 2011, Playhouse Disney turned into Disney Junior, extending its outreach too.
Also comprising the channels Disney Channel and Disney Cinemagic, along with non-linear services, the Disney multiplex reaches 20 million households, and claims five million video-on-demand (VOD) requests on catch-up.
In 2011, Disney Channel was extended to be included in the basic offers of all operators including ADSL providers, and introduced a SVOD service called Disney Channel Avant-Première which allows viewers to watch upcoming programmes seven days ahead of their first TV run.
"This is now the most powerful youth multiplex," says Helène Etzi, VP and general director of Disney TV channels.
The whole offer generates a 9.6% audience share of kids aged four to 14 and over 10% on the four to ten-year-old demo, while Disney Channel leads themed channels in France on the over four-year-old demo with a 0.9% audience share.
Presenting its 2013-2014 line-up on Thursday in Paris, Disney group said it aims to consolidate "its leading position" next season. Programmes will mix "quality US shows" with original French content.

Canal+ to exclusively broadcast Wimbledon in HD in Spain
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 21-06-2013
Prisa-owned pay-TV company, Canal+ is the only platform which will broadcast the Wimbledon Grand Slam tennis tournament in Spain, from Monday.
As was the case with Roland Garros, no Spanish company will broadcast the whole tournament free-to-air.
Canal+ will broadcast live in HD all the matches from the tournament. Thanks to multiscreen technology, viewers can choose among the matches which are being played at the same time during the first week of the tournament.
Prisa´s video-on-demand (VOD) service, Yomvi, will offer the best matches of the day during the two weeks that Wimbledon lasts. The semi-finals and finals will also be broadcast by Canal+1.
All the matches and special programmes with pre and post analyses will rely on Canal+'s team of tennis journalists. Jose Antonio Mielgo, Roberto Carretero, Miguel Angel Calleja and Noelia Blasco will commentate on all the matches.
For the previous Grand Slam tournament, Roland Garros, Canal+ initially broadcast it exclusively, but Mediaset later purchased the rights and broadcast some of the matches through Cuatro. No moves in this direction have been indicated as yet for the Wimbledon tournament.

Uruguay and Brazil connected by fibre
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 21-06-2013
This week Brazil and Uruguay opened the first fibre connection point on the border between the two countries.
Uruguay's public telco Antel and its Brazilian equal Telebras have built a telecom station in Santana do Livramento, Brazil, which is now up and running, giving free Internet access to both sides of the border.
According to the Argentinian site Telesemana, Antel is providing a 100Mbps fibre optic connection to the centre. The data exchange agreement between the two partners establishes a rate of 1Gbps.
This is the first international connection for Telebras, but it's not the first in the Latin American region. The project between Antel and Telebras is part of the region's plan to connect all South American data networks.
Antel has already been involved in some international activities. Since 2011, the Uruguayan state company has been working in the US, through Antel USA in Miami.
Antel is also the biggest Internet provider in Uruguay, having over 90% of the country's connections and nearly 500,000 fibre customers.
