    Sky Italia continues corporate consolidation
    Editor | 20-06-2013
Leading Italian pay-TV provider Sky Italia has made the second senior management changes in a matter of a few days.
Hot on the heels of appointing Delia Bushell as Chief Commercial Officer to lead the Marketing & Sales department, Sky Italia has consolidated its programming structure to follow a model already adopted by News Corp in the UK and in Germany.
Henceforth there will be a single group led by Andrea Scrosati who has been appointed Executive Vice President Programming and put in charge of Cinema, Entertainment, Partner Channels and Sky TG24. The key sport content will remain a separate group.
Commenting on the changes, Andrea Zappia, CEO of Sky Italia, said: “Sky boasts a wealth of outstanding premium content, but it still has great potential for further improving its quality and investing in new TV formats. This new division was created to fulfil this potential, and Andrea Scrosati’s great professionalism and in-depth knowledge of the TV sector are the best guarantee for achieving this important goal.”

    France 24 plans Spanish version
    Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 20-06-2013
French international news channel France 24 is planning to launch a Spanish feed in order to expand into Latin America, Marie-Christine Saragosse, president of Audiovisuel Extérieur de la France (AEF), has told the press agency AFP.
The channel already offers French, English and Arabic language versions.
"Latin America is still a zone where we can improve our distribution, a conquest area," Saragosse added. "Can we go there with versions in French and English only? We tend to think no, we need a Spanish feed. For instance, this could take the form of two hours broadcast in Spanish from the French channel. Latin America is Francophile, developing economically, we have an opportunity."
France 24 is already broadcasting in some Latin American countries including Argentina, Venezuela and Chile, mostly in French.
France 24 claims a cumulated weekly audience of 45 million viewers worldwide with its three language versions.
This breaks down into 17 million in the Arabic countries, 21 millions in Africa and six million in Europe.

Connected TV ecosystem poised to hit $14BN by 2017
    Michelle Clancy | 20-06-2013
The connected TV apps and services market is expected to explode in the next five years as new app frameworks in smart TVs, over-the-top (OTT) set-tops (i.e., Apple TV, Roku), Blu-ray devices and game consoles serve as the foundation for a new TV app economy.
As a result, research firm NextMarket Insights forecasts that the US TV app economy will reach $14 billion by 2017, up from just under $4.5 billion in 2012. However, hurdles remain.
"Market growth will be driven by a number of monetisation models," said Michael Wolf, chief analyst for NextMarket Insights. "The growth of app-delivered subscriptions, virtual pay-TV bundles, advertising, premium apps, in-app purchases, transactional content and digital to physical commerce will result in a substantial new market opportunity for both new entrants and nimble incumbents."
While the rise of powerful software platforms on connected devices and maturing monetisation models will result in significant growth, challenges lie ahead for the TV app economy. Platform fragmentation, an immature advertising ecosystem and resistance by incumbents could all hinder growth in coming years.
"The biggest hurdle going forward for the TV app economy is the number of connected TV software frameworks," said Wolf. "There are no less than ten connected TV software platforms in use by major OEMS today, with no clear winner in sight."
With such a fragmented market, the potential for disruption is significant, according to NextMarket Insights. One potential catalyst would be significant investment in a connected TV apps and services platform by either Apple or Amazon.
"Both companies bring substantial strengths in digital distribution, content packaging and commerce that could alter the landscape," said Wolf. "We think one or both of these players will make a push into this market in the coming 12-18 months."

    June 20, 2013 08.52 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The Lithuanian incumbent telco TEO will from today (June 20) take part in a unique international cinema experiment.
It will see the release of a documentary film called Viramundo take place on the same day in cinemas as on TEO’s IPTV Interactive Gala TV VOD service.
The aim of the experiment, which has been initiated by European film makers, is to promote new film distribution models and to offer an alternative to the established practice, when films are distributes on VOD or DVD only after their cinematic release.
It is expected that a change to simultaneous releases would be beneficial for non-commercial and low-budget moviemakers. Poland, the UK, Portugal, France and Luxembourg are also participating in the experiment.
