Viewers watch more mobile, tablet video
    Joseph O'Halloran | 19-06-2013
Tablet and mobile video are breaking new records with live video dominating video-on-demand as television is transformed from a linear service into a personalised, online, mobile experience, the latest Ooyala Global Video Index has revealed.
Maintaining a trend shown throughout the last couple of months, the survey for Q1 2013 looking at the viewing habits of nearly 200 million unique viewers in 130 countries, found that fundamentally more people are watching more content on more screens than ever before.
The data showed that Q1 2013 saw new records in the percentage of total viewing time, but with the standout that the share of tablet and mobile video grew 19% in Q1 2013 with mobile and tablet video now accounting for more than 10% of all online video plays. Ooyala revealed that this was the highest percentage to date reported by its survey and more than double share that the platforms accounted for in Q1 2012.
Contrary to perception that the portable platform is used mainly for video snacking, the survey also revealed that mobile and tablet video viewers spent more than half of their total online viewing time watching long-form with the quarter being the first three-month period that mobile (53%) and tablets (52%) outperformed desktop PCs (38%) in terms of percentage of time spent watching long-form video. Indeed in the increasingly crucial tablet sector, a quarter of total viewing time was spent with content more than 60 minutes long.
From a global perspective, desktop viewers watched live news, sports and special events for an average of 40 minutes per session in Q1 2013 while viewers watched live video 13 times longer than VOD on desktops last quarter, four times longer on tablets and three times longer on mobile devices.
“Measurement is the most important tool video publishers have as premium TV content moves online,” said Sudhir Kaushik, director of products, insights and optimisation at Ooyala. “Our ability to collect data from each unique viewer on any device at any time and provide intelligent recommendations about what videos or ads to serve next, keeps audiences engaged longer and allows our customers to make more money from video.”

VIDI links stadiums for Confederations Cup TV broadcast
    Gabriel Miramar-Garcia | 19-06-2013
Saturday 15 June 2013 marked the start of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil, kicking off the year leading up to the 2014 FIFA World Cup. When it comes to television coverage of all the matches, VIDI Gmbh has been selected to supply and support the technology that will be used to link contribution circuits between the six venues being used for the Confederations Cup, using Media Links MD8000 codecs.
From the northernmost stadium of Castelao in the city of Fortaleza to Rio de Janerio and the Maracanã stadium, every venue will be linked to the International Broadcast Coordination Centre (IBCC) in Belo Horizonte by fibre optic cable, driven by MD8000 codecs.
"The MD8000 is particularly suited to this task, with a modular design that allows the configuration to exactly match the demands of each situation, and a robust redundancy scheme that allows hitless operation - guaranteeing quality of service," VIDI said.
VIDI is also providing a service agreement: a team of two engineers at each stadium, plus a further four at the IBCC will be assisting with the initial installation, as well as monitoring the performance of the equipment throughout the transmission period.
Host Broadcast Services (HBS), host broadcaster of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, is responsible for all the audio and video coverage of the tournaments, and the overall installation of all the equipment. It chose VIDI as a direct result of the success of VIDI's involvement with the UEFA Euro2012 tournament, where the contribution links were also served by Media Links MD8000 codecs

Dotscreen develops Deezer jukebox for Xbox 360
    June 20, 2013 06.33 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Dotscreen, a French firm specialising in multi-screen applications, has designed a jukebox for Deezer on the Microsoft Xbox 360.
The musical streaming service is now available to all European customers with an Xbox Live subscription. Having previously used the firm to develop its application for the leading brands of connected TV, Deezer decided to call upon Dotscreen to tackle the challenge of the Xbox game console.
In Discovery Mode, the new Deezer application provides access to several thousand thematic radio stations and over 20 million tracks (in 30 second clips), all totally free of charge. Those who subscribe to Deezer Premium+ will have access to all their playlists, and unlimited access to Deezer’s full music catalogue.
Dotscreen has fine-tuned the application to make it compatible with Kinect technology. Users will consequently be able to control the service by gesture as well as voice. Each console can be simultaneously connected to as many as three Deezer accounts, thereby multiplying the opportunities to share tracks and discover other users’ musical tastes.
Dotscreen is one of the few firms in the world to hold Xbox developer status.

    Netflix announces Netherlands launch
    June 20, 2013

Netflix is set to launch in the Netherlands later this year in the latest stage of its European expansion efforts, the firm has announced.

Netflix said that, like elsewhere, Netherlands subscribers will be able to access Hollywood, local and global TV series and films, including Netflix Original Series like House of Cards and Arrested Development on tablets, phones, TVs, game consoles and computers.

Users in the Netherlands can sign up now to get an email alert when the VOD service goes live. Netflix said that further details on pricing, content and supported devices will be available later in the year.

The launch follows Netflix’s rollout in the Nordic countries of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland in October. In Europe, it is also currently available in the UK and Ireland.

Netflix said during its Q1 earnings announcement in April that it planned to launch in an additional European market in the second half of 2013.

Local reports from last month claimed that Netflix was looking at the Netherlands, France and Belgium as new European launch markets.

In a posting on the firm’s job site earlier this year, Netflix also said it was looking to hire language experts “to provide localisation for the Netflix experience in the following languages: Turkish, Dutch, Hindi, French, and Korean.”

Global DTH revenues set to overtake cable this year
    June 20, 2013

According to Digital TV Research’s Digital TV World Revenue Forecasts, global pay TV revenues will reach US$203 billion (€152 billion) by 2018, up by US$19 billion on the figure for 2012. Growth is expected to slow down to an annual rate of below 2% from 2015, compared with 3.2% in 2013.

Global DTH revenues will grow from US$83 billion in 2012 to US$97 billion by 2018, according to Digital TV Research, with market leader the US’s share falling from 43.5% to 38.7% as emerging markets take up the slack. US pay TV revenues are expected to fall by US$5.1 billion as homes convert to bundles and competition forces down prices.

Brazil is expected to double its DTH revenues between 2012-18, while DTH revenues in India are expected to grow by 135%.

Arris looks to eastern European growth
    June 20, 2013

Following its US$2.2 billion (€1.7 billion) acquisition of Motorola Home earlier this year, Arris is looking to Turkey and Russia as key growth markets.

Speaking at Arris-Motorola’s Video Leadership Forum event in Berlin, Steve McCaffrey, Arris’ senior vice-president of EMEA and former Motorola vice-president, said that the combined business was also looking to end-to-end multiscreen, broadband evolution and headend evolution to grow its business.

“The key growth markets for us that we’re putting a lot of time and resource into are Turkey and Russia, because there’s a dynamic about those market places – there’s a huge amount of growth,” said McCaffrey.

He said that Turkey’s broadband penetration currently stands at around 24%, but that the government is planning to boost that to 46% by 2016.

“That’s a phenomenal amount of growth – and of course they’re going to have to look for services that is going to pull through that broadband investment and video is a key component of that,” said McCaffrey.

He also pointed to countries like South Africa and the Ukraine as providing DVB-T opportunities as they switch from analogue to digital in the coming years. Earlier this month Arris did a deal with Polish operator Vectra to supply it with a hybrid HD set-tops to transition its analogue subscribers to digital.

Outside of individual products and regions, McCaffrey said that focusing on the trio of end-to-end multiscreen, broadband and headend evolution, would allow Arris “to make a step-change to our business.”

In terms of the latter he said: “You’re seeing headends change drastically – there’s an inflection point in technology going from encoding to transcoding, going from 40 channel systems, to 100 channel systems to full OTT type services.” McCaffrey added that end-to-end multiscreen is an issue that “every operator – cable and telco – is talking about.”
