Social TV is about to get smart
    June 19, 2013 08.12 Europe/London By Robert Briel
Video content discovery solutions provider Jinni, has announced the release of Watch together, the first effective social discovery feature to recommend content that suits the tastes of more than one viewer. The feature is part of the latest Jinni discovery engine API, and is now available for implementation by the company’s global customers and technology partners.
Based on Jinni’s unique semantic taste profiling of each user, the engine is able to recommend something to watch that will suit all the household members who want to watch TV or movies together. The new ‘Watch together’ social discovery feature can also be used to find a group of friends for group watching, either via online social viewing applications or at a movie theater.
For example; if you want to go see a particular movie, Jinni ‘watch together’ can scan all your friends on Facebook and recommend those who are also highly likely to enjoy the particular title.
“You may have hundreds of friends on social networks, but only a few have similar taste in TV and movies.” said Jinni co-founder and CEO, Yosi Glick of the new feature.
“TV is a naturally social experience and ‘watch together’ was developed to harness the power of social networks to find the perfect content and friends to watch it with, so people can stop wasting time searching and spend more time enjoying great shows and movies.”
The Jinni gene-based discovery solution claims to have differentiated itself from other engines by taking content analysis and unique user-centric recommendations to the next level – with natural language understanding capabilities, Jinni meets the growing consumer demand for a semantic cross-platform experience.

Arirang is launching on Russia’s largest IPTV operator, Rostelecom and two cable operators, MTS and ER-telecom, starting from July 2013.
The Korean channel launched in Moscow in 2000 and is now expanding across the country.
The broadcaster said that “Korean pop-culture has not reached much [of Russia]“, but this will change now with the new carriage deal in place. “The wall was too high for Korean channels in Russia, not even knowing Psy’s ‘Kang-nam Style’, despite the growing popularity of Korean dramas and K-Pop all around the world.”
ArirangTV began subtitling in Russian on March, 2008 and acquired the official license for broadcasting in 2011. In 2013, ArirangTV has begun to service age ratings in every programme to protect children, following the Russian regulation.

    Netflix comes to the Netherlands
    June 19, 2013 07.10 Europe/London By Robert Briel

It’s official – Netflix has announced it will be launching in the Netherlands before the end of the year.
In a statement, Netflix said the service will become available on TV sets, tablets, smart phones, game consoles and computers. The offer will include Hollywood movies, local productions as well as Netflix originals House of Cards and Arrested Development.
Details on pricing and available content will be announced at a later stage, but industry insiders have already noticed that the company is negotiating VOD rights with major studios – in competition with premium broadcasters HBO and Chellomedia’s Film1.
As an over-the-top service, Netflix will compete head on with current VOD portals such as Pathé Thuis, Videoland and Ximon.nl as well as with the on-demand services from major cable nets Ziggo and UPC. However, these VOD services are based on transactional viewing rather than the subscription model Netflis is using.
Rumours about Netflix coming to Holland started when the company started some months ago to advertise job openings.
Netflix has just opened a Dutch website, where people can register with their email address to stay informed about launch details of the service.
Netflix has more than 36 million members in 40 countries, of which 29 million are in the US. The company started its international expansion in Canada in 2010, followed by Latin America in 2011 and the UK, Ireland and Nordic countries in 2012.
During the presentation of its 2012 figures, Netflix confirmed that it would announce its next European launch this July. Apart from The Netherlands, France, Belgium and Germany were rumoured to be on the list.
