ATV Austria to launch HD channel
    Jörn Krieger | 18-06-2013
Austrian commercial broadcaster ATV will offer its main channel in high definition from 15 July 2013: ATV HD will transmit via satellite on Astra (19.2° East) on the frequency 11.244 GHz H (SR 22,000, FEC 5/6).
Like ATV, the HD version will be secured by basic encryption to limit reception to Austria for rights reasons. Domestic DTH satellite households will be able to receive the signal using the ORF Digital card or a Sky smartcard without additional fees.
Several Austrian cable operators also want to carry ATV HD as part of their channel line-ups, according to the broadcaster.

Netflix signs biggest deal to date with DreamWorks
    June 18, 2013

Netflix says that its new deal for original programming from DreamWorks is its largest yet and will cover 300 hours of new programming.

The streaming service and animation studio already had a programming deal in place with Dreamworks for Turbo: F.A.S.T., a TV spin-off from upcoming DreamWorks animated movie Turbo.

The new deal will see the partners make TV series based on new and classic DreamWorks characters and movie titles. The first fruits of the partnership will be delivered next year, the companies said, without specifying what the first shows might be.

DreamWorks movie titles include Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon franchises and it has also acquired Classic Media, which owns Mr Magoo, Casper the Friendly Ghost and several other classic titles.

DreamWorks is moving heavily into TV and on Netflix, its characters will be introduced as a branded collection of shows.

“This is an unprecedented commitment to original content in the internet television space,” said DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg.

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said: “This deal represents a major expansion of what’s already a phenomenal relationship, allowing us to bring beloved DreamWorks characters to the 40 countries where Netflix operates and setting the stage for us to innovate together as we expand into new markets.”

ERT back on air after court ruling
    June 18, 2013

Greece’s public broadcaster ERT is to cointinue broadcasting during a restructure process after a Greek court ordered its services to be put back on air.

The ruling followed prime minister Antonis Samaras’ decision to shut down the broadcaster overnight to save money a week ago, a move that led to widespread protests at home and abroad, and led to ERT staff continuing to broadcast a signal in defiance of the government.

The Council of State, the country’s top administrative court, accepted that a “new” lower-cost broadcaster must be set up but said that ERT must be reopened in the meantime in line with demands from Samaras’ coalition partners.

The fractious coalition partners all claimed victory from the ruling, with Samaras’ New Democracy party reitirating that ERT would be shut down while leftwing parties said that the court had confirmed that the government did not have the right to close down the broadcaster.

The European Broadcasting Union welcomed the decision.

“This is a positive turn because it means public service media will return to Greece. We welcome the news that ERT will reopen, and we offer our support to build a new, successful, independent and sustainable public broadcaster that will contribute to pluralism and diversity in Greek society,” said EBU president Jean Paul Philippot.

The EBU had earlier condemned the Greek government’s threat of legal action against satellite operators that continued to transmit ERT’s signal over Europe and Asia.

Set-top box is not dead, says Arris
    June 18, 2013

The set-top box “isn’t dead” but will continue to evolve into a home networking environment, according to Steve McCaffrey, Arris’ senior vice-president of EMEA.

Speaking at the Arris-Motorola’s Video Leadership Forum event in Berlin, McCaffrey said that though Motorola Home’s vision has never changed, though it previously “got a little bit confused” as its customers “didn’t know whether we were competitors or vendors in many ways.”

Outlining Motorola Home and Arris’ aims post-Arris takeover, McCaffrey, who was previously vice-president at Motorola, said: “Our vision, particularly with the set top is there needs to be an aggregation point within the home. Today the aggregation point, supported by a video service provider happens to be a set-top box, but I think in time to come it will develop into some form of gateway and then into some form of home control point. The set-top box isn’t dead, it’s actually evolving to continue to be that control point within the home, but very much expanding into a home networking type environment. That measurement is very much smartened up now inside our new Arris organisation.”

He added that under Arris, the Motorola Home brand would be phased out in the next 12 months.
