    ESPN to drop 3D channel
    June 14, 2013

ESPN is set to pull the plug on its US 3D sports channel by the end of this year, the broadcaster has said.

The news comes three years to the month after the Disney-owned sports operator introduced the ESPN 3D channel. ESPN attributed the closure to poor viewer figures and said it would instead focus on other products.

In a statement, ESPN said: “Due to limited viewer adoption of 3D services to the home, ESPN is discontinuing ESPN 3D. We are committing our 3D resources to other products and services that will better serve fans and affiliates.

“Nobody knows more about sports in 3D than ESPN, and we will be ready to provide the service to fans if or when 3D does take off. As technology leaders, we continue to experiment with things like Ultra High Definition television production tools to produce our current ESPN family of HD channels.”

The 3D network launched on DirecTV, Comcast, and AT&T U-verse and also went live on Time Warner Cable, Verizon FiOS, Bright House Networks and Cablevision. Events covered on the network included 3D coverage of the 2010 World Cup as well as Masters golf and NBA playoff basketball.

News Corp reportedly eyeing Canal+ Spain move
    June 14, 2013

News Corp has approached Telefσnica and Spanish pay TV operator Prisa expressing interest in buying a stake in the latter’s Canal+ satellite TV arm, according to Spanish news site El Confidencial.

The report claims that Telefσnica, which already owns a 22% stake in Canal+, has been in discussions with Prisa since January about buying its 56% majority share in the pay TV business.

However, Sky is now said to be amicably talking to Telefσnica about also buying into the business in a move that would give it TV rights to top flight football in England, Italy, Germany and Spain.

The report claims that Prisa has already rejected an initial offer from Telefσnica about taking its stake in Canal+, formerly known as Digital+, saying that Telefσnica CEO Cιsar Alierta is not prepared to pay more than €900 million for the 56%.

MTG to create new digital hub under Rikard Steiber
    June 14, 2013

Modern Times Group (MTG) is to create a new ‘digital hub’ to accelerate the pace of its innovation and expansion into digital distribution.

The new unit, MTGx, will he headed by MTG executive vice-president and chief digital officer Rikard Steiber (pictured). The division will be charged with developing video-on-demand experiences, building a portfolio of new entertainment services and providing centralised digital skills and platforms for the Group across all markets and companies.

    MTGx will comprise four pillars.

xPlay will be focused on advertising-funded online catch-up services for its TV channels and vertical offering like sports and music content as well as the online pay TV service Viaplay.

xVentures will be responsible for building, partnering and investing in a portfolio of new entertainment services like the second screen service Like.tv and the online gaming portal Viagame. As part of this effort xVentures will establish presences in start-up communities in several countries, with an initial focus on Sweden, the UK, and the US, to find partnership and investment opportunities.

A third pillar, xCreations, will comprise a digital production hub for the creation of “digital first” content for web and mobile platforms as well as extending the life cycle of traditional linear TV content by utilizing the opportunities presented by the digital environment and social media, while a fourth, xLabs, will be the R&D centre for the entire hub.

MTG has begun a process of hiring talent and says it has made a number of key hires from the likes of Google, Spotify and Universal Music in recent months.

“We want to create personal and social user experiences that connect people to the entertainment they love the most from their favourite movies, sports, series, music, and games, and I look forward to building MTGx as an integrated part of MTG’s digital activities going forward,” said Steiber.

Separately, Separately, MTG has finalised its acquisition of UK-based distributor DRG, and bought Norwegian production company Novemberfilm.

The Scandinavian production and broadcast group has beaten off competition from Sky Vision to acquire a 92.4% stake in DRG, which counts The Inbetweeners and Don’t Tell the Bride in its catalogue, for an enterprise value of £15 million (€18 million).

Greek government moves to create slimmed down pubcaster as criticism mounts
    June 14, 2013

The Greek government has unveiled plans to open a new, small-scale public broadcaster as criticism of its decision to close down ERT mounts both at home and abroad.

A Greek government spokesman announced plans to create a new service at the end of August with fewer than half the staff of the shut down ERT. The Greek public broadcaster went off air yesterday, with the loss of 2,700 jobs, although ERT journalists have defied the decision by continuing to broadcast a live web feed from the broadcaster’s occupied studios.

ERT journalists have questioned the timing of the decision to close the broadcaster. The International Monetary Fund, European Union and European Central Bank have previously demanded that Greece cut its public sector employees by 2,000 by the end of the summer.

European Broadcasting Union president Jean-Paul Philippot has condemned the overnight shutdown of ERT as “the worst kind of censorship” and “a violent assault on democratic debate which is not acceptable”.

“When the microphone of a journalist is cut off, it’s like the voice of democracy being silenced. This has just been brutally done to 1,300 journalists – brutally in all senses because the Greek government has sent in the police to cut off a broadcaster and stop journalists from doing their job. That is the voice of democracy, the counterweight, a pressure group, that the government, the economic power is gagging,” Philippot told Belgian broadcaster RTBF, of which he is director-general.

Philippot’s comments follow the sending of a letter by EBU director-general Ingrid Deltenre to the Greek prime minister calling on him to revoke the decision.

Greek leftwing opposition leader Alexis Tsipras meanwhile has described the closure of ERT as an “institutional coup”.

VOD service Cirikus in distribution deal with Com Hem
    June 14, 2013

New subscription video-on-demand Cirkus has scored a major multi-year distribution deal with Swedish cable operator Com Hem, DTVE sister title TBI has learned.

From autumn this year, Cirkus will be made available to Com Hem customers as a standalone service or bundled with other TV products, as the cableco makes a concerted push into on-demand content.

The deal is coup for Cirkus, which launched to the international market earlier this year, as TBI revealed in March. The company then went on to score content distribution deals with a number of key producers.

Content included in the Com Hem agreement includes shows from BBC Worldwide, All3Media, ITVSGE and other major independent producers, giving Com Hem programmes such as Sherlock, Lewis, Skins, Silent Witness, Accused and Poirot.

Cirkus’s founders Hugh Williams and Mark Bradford plan to secure distribution in Scandinavia, where British content is always well received, before moving on to other territories.

“We have developed a unique service based on the very best of what British television has to offer, presented to viewers in a way they increasingly like to consume content. We are very confident that Com Hem subscribers will develop a strong following and loyalty to Cirkus,” said Bradford.

The news comes ahead of Com Hem launching a TiVo service for the first time.

“Cirkus includes some of the most successful TV dramas in Sweden and we are very excited to be the first TV supplier in the Nordics to make the service available to our customers. We will soon be offering the very best TV entertainment solution available through TiVo from Com Hem, and we are very pleased that it will include a new innovative service like Cirkus,” sais Simon Gate, director of TV and content at Com Hem.

Cirkus is owned by UK-based consultancy Content and Co. in conjunction with media law firm Wiggin and digital design agency Ostmodern.

Yahoo! supplies the cross-device platform and personalisation technology to ensure that Sky’s quality content is delivered to new and existing audiences in the most relevant way,” said Jean-Christophe Conti, Yahoo! vice president and head of partnerships EMEA.

BBC to launch first Red Button Holby City episode
    June 14, 2013

The BBC is due to launch a special one-off episode of its medical drama Holby City that will be available exclusively through its Red Button service.

The episode will go live after next Tuesday’s episode airs and will focus on two of the show’s most popular characters.

Last year the firm aired special Red Button episodes around the shows Casualty and Doctors as a way to add value for loyal fans of the shows.

Last month the BBC’s governing body, the BBC Trust, recommended that the BBC merge its online and Red Button operations under a single service license to help them complement each other in the future.
