    Gannett swallows up Belo

US media company Gannett will buy Texan-based TV group Belo in a deal valued at US$2.2bn.

The acquisition of broadcaster Belo, which has been backed by the boards of both companies, will propel Gannett’s TV channel portfolio from 23 to 43.

The move will help Gannett to reach around a third of all US households, and will make it the fourth-largest owner of major network affiliates in the country.

The Washington DC-based firm is America’s largest newspaper publisher by circulation and owns titles including USA Today as well as a host of state TV channels.

Belo operate 20 TV stations, with channels that have affiliations with ABC, Fox and NBC, amongst others.

The deal will see Gannett pay US$13.75 per share, a 28% premium on the share’s closing price on June 12.

Gannett CEO Gracia Martore said: “We have been successfully transforming Gannett into a diversified multi-media company with broadcast, digital and publishing components across high-growth markets nationwide, this is another important step in the process.”

The deal is expected to be completed by the end of 2013, but must first receive approval from the various regulatory bodies.

    C4 cultivates Garden exec

Channel 4 in the UK has appointed The Garden’s Amy Flanagan as documentaries commissioning editor, following the departure of Mark Raphael.

Flanagan will join C4 after serving as executive producer at the London-based indie, where she series produced and directed the first series of 24 Hours in A&E.

The position was vacated by Raphael, who took on the creative director role at UK indie Dragonfly last month.

C4 has also hired Alex Menzies and Ian Dunkley to join the features and factual entertainment commissioning team.

Dunkley will become a commissioning editor at C4′s factual team, joining from Channel 5 where he had the same title.

Meanwhile, Menzies joins C4′s features department as commissioning editor, and will be alongside Nick Hornby, who has been appointed features commissioning editor permanently.

Finally, Katie Boyd, who commissioned a range of programmes including Superscrimpers, Double Your House for Half the Money and All Back To School, is leaving C4 to take a career break

ESPN ditches 3D for Ultra HD

American sports channel ESPN 3D is to be closed down by parent Disney after three years of operation.

The channel, which will cease transmissions by the end of the year, launched in 2010 with offerings that included American football, Masters golf and action from the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

But the channel said customers have not warmed to the technology, citing a “lack of demand from the majority of consumers.”

Disney is now looking to focus their efforts on Ultra HD or 4K TV rather than 3D broadcasts.

“We are committing our 3D resources to other products and services that will better serve fans and affiliates,” said ESPN spokeswoman Katina Arnold.

The channel charges an average of US$2.79 from each subscriber, and is carried by Time Warner Cable Inc, Comcast Corp and DirecTV, amongst others.

Saban adds Scardino to senior team

Power Rangers parent Saban Brands has hired the former CEO of social TV start-up Viggle as chief operating officer.

Janet Scardino left Viggle abruptly in August last year, ahead of the company’s planned but ultimately aborted merger with TV check-in service GetGlue.

The one-time 19 Entertainment exec will now report to Saban Brands president Elie Dekel and chief financial officer William Kehoe.

Scardino will oversee Saban’s media operations across television, digital and games, content distribution and ad sales for all the company’s properties worldwide – including Power Rangers, Digimon, Paul Frank and others.

Prior to Viggle, Scardino was president of branded entertainment at 19, coproducers of American Idol. She started out at MTV, where she held a number or programming roles before moving on to become MD of Disney Channel in Italy.

    New-look ERT prompts protests

New plans for a slimmed down version of Greek broadcaster ERT have emerged following the pubcaster’s surprise closure on Tuesday evening.

The Greek government has said that the organisation, also known as the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation, was a “haven of waste” and will now be reformed as a smaller entity.

The new broadcaster will employ less than half of the estimated 2,600 staff who worked for ERT, with the organisation’s new workforce set to number around 1,200.

The country’s prime minister Antonio Samaras told business leaders on Wednesday that his government wasn’t “closing down public radio and television.”

“In fact, it is only now that we are going to get proper public radio and television,” he said, according to the BBC.

Simos Kedikoglou, a government spokesman, added that the decision to close ERT had come after a year of trying to overhaul the broadcaster. “It wasn’t possible to change anything,” he said.

Buses and trains in the Greek capital Athens stopped running on Thursday in response to the closure, while protestors took to the streets.

    Smithsonian crowns skyscraper special

The Smithsonian Channel in the US has ordered a one-hour doc focusing on the construction of New York’s One World Trade Center.

The one-off special will be coproduced by New York City-based Pipeline 39 Entertainment, and follows the installation of a 758-tonne spire that will be placed on top of the building’s 104 stories.

The channel will air the show, titled Crowning New York, later this year to coincide with the lighting of the spire’s beacon.

Smithsonian and Pipeline were granted behind-the-scenes access to the site for the show, filming from helicopters and helmet-mounted cameras.

The building’s architect Daniel Libeskind and former mayor Rudolph Giuliani are amongst those interviewed for the programme.

Crowning New York will also feature unseen footage from the 9/11 attack
