Orange Romania launches DTH TV service with GlobeCast on Astra
    Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 11-06-2013
GlobeCast (Eutelsat) and SES have announced they are both providing services to Orange Romania for the launch of a satellite DTH TV package this month.
The service will use multiple transponders on Astra's 31.5 degrees East orbital position and will be broadcast in the DVB-S2 and MPEG4 technical standards. GlobeCast will provide contribution, encryption and encoding for standard definition and HD channels in the package.
Orange Romania's new TV package will complement its existing mobile service, enabling the company to offer full multi-device communication services to its customers.
"Orange TV means the highest number of HD TV channels, the best satellite beam strength and coverage, dedicated customer care, multiscreen access, a smaller and efficient dish and other remarkable features that will allow us to offer an amazing TV experience," said Jean-Francois Fallacher, chief executive officer of Orange Romania.

    KDG confirms Vodafone approach
    June 12, 2013 10.19 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Kabel Deutschland has confirmed it has been approached by the British mobile operator Vodafone.
In a brief statement, KDG said it had received a preliminary approach by Vodafone Group PLC regarding a possible offer. “There is no certainty that any offer will ultimately made nor as to the terms on which any such offer might be made,” the company said.
Vodafone has been regularly linked with a bid for KDG since speculation first emerged in late 2008. The story reappeared early in 2010 just before KDG listed on the Frankfurt stock exchange in March 2010.
Vodafone, which finally admitted its ambition for KDG in February, confirmed it had made an initial approach, but said there was no certainty an offer would be made.
Liberty Media has also been a potential suitor, but any such ambitions seem likely to be thwarted by the German anti-trust authorities, much to the annoyance of President Mike Fries who believes cable has an uneven playing field compared to other platforms

    Technicolor announces refinancing plan
    June 12, 2013 10.03 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Technicolor has announced plans to raise $330 million in Senior Notes due 2020 and €745 million of Term Loans that fall due in 2020.
As of May 31, 2013, Technicolor had senior secured debt amounting to €1,186 million with an average nominal interest rate of 8.20%.
The French tech firm is seeking the consent of its creditors for the plan that will run through Tech Finance & Co S.C.A., an independent, stand-alone special-purpose vehicle, which will purchase the outstanding debt.
Frederic Rose, chief executive officer of Technicolor said: “This refinancing is a great opportunity for Technicolor to reduce its average interest expense, extend the maturity profile of its debt, and gain greater operating flexibility. This transaction is an important new step for the company as it will further improve its financial structure and benefit from lighter operational and financial covenants.”

Game of Thrones hits new piracy record
    June 12, 2013 09.46 Europe/London By Julian Clover

The season finale of the HBO series Game of Thrones has set a new record for illegal file sharing.
According to the BitTorrent website more than 170,000 people simultaneously shared the episode, just minutes after its Sunday night broadcast.
BitTorrent commented that although the show has been shared millions of times online, this was the first time that so many people had shared a single file.
Most downloaders come from Australia, followed by the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. This is something of a failure for the Day&Date concept, which allowed subscribers to Sky Atlantic to view the broadcast on Monday evening, less than 24 hours after its US telecast.
However, HBO programming president Michael Lombardo appears non-plused by the blatant piracy. He recently told Entertainment Weekly: “The demand is there. And it certainly didn’t negatively impact the DVD sales. [Piracy is] something that comes along with having a wildly successful show on a subscription network.”

    New national station for Serbia?
    June 12, 2013 08.59 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Serbia could see the launch of a new national commercial station in September.
Balkan Insight reports that Sky Info Plus has taken over the premises of the defunct TV Avala and plans to apply for the frequency it used to the Serbian Broadcasting Agency (RRA).
The deadline for doing so is July 7, and if Sky Info Plus is successful it could go on air in September.
Sky Info Plus has ownership links to the ruling Progressive Party and has taken on a number of former TV Avala employees.
TV Avala had financial difficulties for a number of years and lost its broadcasting licence in October 2012 soon after the government stopped its proposed sale.
Significantly, Vincent Degert, the head of the EU delegation in Serbia, said earlier this week the EU was hoping TV Avala’s frequency would be used for DTT test transmissions. Serbia has set June 17, 2015 as its analogue switch off date.

    Greece shuts down ERT
    June 12, 2013 07.47 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The Greek government has taken the unprecedented step of shutting down the public broadcaster ERT and firing its entire staff.
However, the move, which happened on Tuesday evening, drew protests from thousands of people outside ERT’s headquarters in Athens and, according to local reports, has been met with defiance by journalists at the station, who have continued to broadcast programmes on digital frequencies and over the internet.
The government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou, himself a former journalist at ERT, described the broadcaster as an “haven of waste” and said it would soon be reopened under a different name but with fewer employees.
Furthermore, its annual budget, derived mostly from receiver licence fees collected through electricity bills, would be slashed from €300 million to €100 million.
The move to shut down ERT has been strongly criticised by the EBU.
In a letter to the Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, its president Jean Paul Philipott and DG Ingrid Deltenre urged him “to use all his powers to immediately reverse this decision”.
They go on to say: While we recognise the need to make budgetary savings, national broadcasters are more important than ever at times of national difficulty. This is not to say that ERT need be managed less efficiently than a private company. Naturally, all public funds must be spent with the greatest of care.”
The EBU says it is on standby to offer its knowledge of Europe’s public service media to provide the advice, assistance and expertise necessary for ERT to be preserved as a true public broadcaster in the European mould.

One billion pay-TV subscribers by 2018
June 12, 2013 11.23 Europe/London By Broadband TV News Correspondent

Global pay-TV households will reach nearly 1 billion by 2018, up from 772 million in 2012 and 814 million in 2013. According to the Digital TV World Household Forecasts report, the Asia Pacific region will contribute 59% (587 million) of the global total by 2018.
Based on forecasts for 97 countries by Digital TV Research, China will have the most pay-TV subs, at 313 million by end-2018, followed by 158 million in India and 107 million in the US. These three countries will account for 58% of global pay-TV households by 2018.
Pay-TV penetration (analogue and digital combined) reached 53.6% of TV households by end-2012, and will rise to 55.7% by end-2013 and 63.1% by 2018. Penetration at end-2018 will range from 86% in North America to 29% in the Middle East and Africa. Pay-TV penetration will remain highest in the Netherlands, at 99.5% by end-2018.
The number of digital TV homes will increase by 667 million between 2012 and 2018 to 1,453 million. The digital TV total will climb by 127 million in 2013 alone. Global digital penetration of TV households will climb from 54.7% at end-2012 to 62.5% by end-2013 and on to 92.0% by 2018.
Of the 667 million digital TV homes to be added between 2012 and 2018, 240 million will come from digital cable to take its total to 513 million. Primary FTA DTT [homes taking DTT but not subscribing to cable, DTH or IPTV] will acquire an additional 225 million – bringing its total to 363 million. Pay DTT will add 7 million to total 16 million. Pay IPTV will increase by 98 million to 167 million, with pay DTH up 73 million to 251 million and FTA DTH up 31 million to 143 million.
The universe is not static as 141 million TV households will be added between 2012 and 2018 to bring the total to 1,580 million. Of the additions, 95 million will come from the Asia Pacific region, of which 36 million will be in China and an extra 35 million in India.
There were still 652 million analog TV households by end-2012. However, this total will fall by 104 million in 2013 alone, with only 127 million remaining by 2018. Analog penetration of TV households will drop from 45.3% at end-2012 to only 8.0% by 2018. There will be 77 million analog terrestrial homes and 49 million analog cable ones by end-2018.

Kabel Deutschland confirms Vodafone's takeover bid
    Jörn Krieger | 12-06-2013
Germany's largest cable company Kabel Deutschland has confirmed that it has received a preliminary approach from UK-based mobile network operator Vodafone regarding a possible offer for the company.
There is no certainty that any offer will ultimately be made or what the terms of any offer might be, Kabel Deutschland said in a statement. No details were given on the amount of the proposed bid from Vodafone.
News agency Bloomberg reported on Vodafone's takeover approach earlier today.
With Deutsche Telekom's fixed-line infrastructure, the mobile network operator could offer its customers a telephone and broadband Internet subscription without having to pay rental fees to landline owners like Deutsche Telekom. It could also relieve its mobile network by transferring data traffic to the fixed-line network, for example through Wi-Fi connections.

Spain's Mediaset buys World Cup rights
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 12-06-2013
Mediaset will exclusively broadcast the 25 matches of the World Cup 2014, which takes place in Brazil next year from 12 June.
This means that all the matches could be broadcast free-to-air to Spanish audiences through the company's main channels.
No official value has been put on the deal as yet, but it is thought that the amount is around €30 million, double that of the offers made by Atresmedia and TVE. Nevertheless, this price is far below the €90 million paid by Prisa for the World Cup in 2010.
Thanks to this agreement with FIFA, Mediaset's channels Telecinco, Cuatro and Energy will broadcast all the matches of the competition, in which Spain's national team will try to ratify its current world champion title.
The audiovisual group is reinforcing its sporting offer, especially with football and the national team. Mediaset has the broadcasting rights for all La Roja games in the Confederations Cup, which starts on Saturday, and in the World Cup, including the preliminary matches.
Mediaset broadcast some matches of the World Cup in South Africa, which were broadcast by Prisa, and Telecinco broadcast the final to an audience of over 15 million viewers, representing an 85% audience share. Currently, this holds the record of being the most watched programme in Spain's television history.

Italy's Canale 5 to broadcast Atresmedia series
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 12-06-2013
The Antena 3 series produced by Boomerang TV, El Secreto del Puente Viejo, is now being broadcast in Italy by Canale 5.
Mediaset has purchased the production of its major competitor in the Spanish audiovisual market, which currently has almost 20% of audience share in the afternoon schedule with over two million viewers.
According to El Mundo, the deal was closed during MIPTV in Cannes in April.
The series, which is being broadcast in Italy as Il Segretto, reached an increasing number of viewers throughout its 580 episodes and hit an audience figure this week of 2.2 million.
The Boomerang production is the first Spanish fiction programme to be broadcast on the most watched Italian channel.
Il Segretto went on air yesterday in the afternoon slot, following the Italian soap opera Cento Vetrine. The viewers' response was positive and the numbers were close to those of the Spanish version, with almost 20% of audience share and around 2.5 million viewers.
Antena 3 is already promoting its next big series, which aims to replace El Secreto. El Tiempo Entre Costuras will be released next autumn. Also a Boomerang TV production, it follows the homonymous best-seller by María Dueñas.
