TiVo settles patent dispute with Cisco, Motorola, Time Warner

As part of the settlement, Google and Cisco will pay TiVo the upfront lump-sum payment of US$490 million, with TiVo agreeing to enter patent licensing agreements with Arris, Google and Cisco.

TiVo and Motorola, Cisco, and Time Warner Cable agreed to dismiss all pending litigation between the companies.

The agreement takes total awards and settlements related to TiVo’s intellectually property, which it has aggressively protected in the past, to roughly US$1.6 billion.

The latest cash will be partly recognised as damages during the second quarter, with the rest to come in over time.

“This settlement significantly enhances our already strong balance sheet, bringing our cash position to over US$1 billion before inclusion of future expected payments of at least US$400 million from prior settlements,” said TiVo CEO and president Tom Rogers.

He added that the firm has now doubled its stock repurchase programme to US$200 million, extending it for an additional two years until August 2015.

Telenet CFO latest executive to depart
    June 11, 2013

The departure marks latest longstanding senior executive to announce their departure from the Belgian cable operator, after chief operating officer Jan Vorstermans said last month that he would leave the company following more than 10 years there.

In March, Telenet’s CEO Duco Sickinghe resigned after nearly 12 years, with former CEO of Australian pay TV provider Austar United Communication, John Porter, taking his place.

Telenet said that Berckmoes “leaves the company on his own initiative” and will stay on until September 30 to assist with the handover to his successor. The operator has launched an external search for its next CFO.

Berckmoes said: “I am leaving with full confidence: Telenet is on a safe journey. The company’s financing is secured in the long term and with John Porter, Telenet has a new CEO who can handle the challenges of a fast changing media and telecom landscape.”

Liberty Global increased its stake in Telenet to 58% in January, but failed in its efforts to take complete control of the firm after not winning the backing of all investors.

    MTS pay TV figures slip
    June 11, 2013

Russian multi-play service provider MTS reported a 1.8% decline in pay TV subscribers quarter-over-quarter in Q1 2013.

For the three months ending March 31, the firm logged 2.885 million pay TV subs in Russia, compared to 2.938 million in the fourth quarter of 2012. Its broadband internet customer numbers stayed roughly level at 2.314 million.

MTS said that its broadband and pay TV subscribers were impacted by “reconciliation of acquired companies’ subscriber definitions with those of MTS.”

However, the firm said that fixed-line revenues went up by 4% year-over-year to RUB14.1 billion (€330 million) due to network growth in the regions, which allowed it to “upsell existing broadband and pay-TV customers and enhance market share.”

Overall, the firm reported consolidated revenues of RUB92.86 billion in the quarter– up 2% year on year. Net income came in at RUB12.96 billion, down 16.9% compared to the same time last year.

    Jörn Krieger | 11-06-2013

German pay-TV broadcaster sportdigital is to launch a new channel for fans of US sports: sportamerica HD has received a ten-year licence from the German media authorities.
The channel aims to close the gap which will arise with the upcoming closure of ESPN America. US parent company ESPN announced in May 2013 that the channel specialising in US sports will retreat from Europe, with the exception of the UK and Ireland, on 31 July 2013.
A licence was also granted to the interactive youth channel joiz which is set to launch in Germany this summer and to Sport1.fm, a sports radio planned by German sports channel Sport1 which will transmit all Bundesliga games live on the Internet from next season.
