    Mr Selfridge opens in Africa

Broadcasters in Africa and Europe have become the latest to acquire UK period drama Mr Selfridge, bringing the total number of countries airing the show to 99.

BBC Entertainment will air the series on its pan-territorial feed across Africa, while NBC Universal Global Networks Italia has picked up the drama for its Diva Universal channel.

Dutch pubcaster NPO has also acquired the series, which stars Jeremy Piven as the flamboyant American entrepreneur who opened his first department store in the UK in 1909.

It is distributed by ITV Studios Global Entertainment (ITVSGE) and was produced by ITV Studios. A second season (10x60′) is currently in production for ITV in the UK.

ITVSGE has previously sold Mr Selfridge to broadcasters including Vision TV in Canada, TVNZ in New Zealand, DR in Denmark and Sundance Channel Global, for countries in Asia and Latin America.

    Sundance set for Lat Am

AMC/Sundance Channel Global, the international division of AMC, has agreed to launch Robert Redford’s Sundance Channel in Latin America this year.

Sundance Channel will debut on satcaster DirecTV in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela in September.

The 24/7 Spanish-language channel will air first-run original drama series alongside locally skewing independent films and documentaries.

DirecTV is also set to launch a separate Portuguese-language channel for its subscribers in Brazil at a later date.

Prior to the September launch, Sundance Channel’s first wholly owned drama series, Rectify, will premiere on DirecTV’s Latin American entertainment network OnDirecTV in July.

Sundance Channel is also available across Europe and in Asia.

The news follows the channel’s commission last week of Jamie’s Dream School (6x60′), a reality series to exec produced by UK chef Jamie Oliver alongside rap star 50 Cent.

The series is based on a format created by Oliver’s Fresh One Productions that aired on Channel 4 in the UK, in which saw cultural icons become teachers at a school filled with drop-outs. The US version, a copro with G Unit Films and Television, will premiere this fall.

    Slice, HGTV renew three

Canada’s Shaw Media has renewed three series on its lifestyle channels Slice and HGTV.

Money Moron (14x30’) follows host Gail Vaz-Oxlade’s attempts to rescue families with financial problems and will return to female-skewing Slice in the autumn.

The series, from Peacock Alley Entertainment, gives participants the chance to win C$10,000 as part of an effort to tackle individuals’ financial infidelities.

Shaw has also greenlit a third series of House of Bryan: In the Sticks (16x30’) and a fourth of Leave it to Bryan (26x30’) for its HGTV Canada home renovation channel. Both shows come from prodco Si Entertainment.

Leave it to Bryan follows contractor Bryan Baeumler as he follows homeowners and forces them to confront the realities of their over-ambitious renovation plans.

House of Bryan: In the Sticks explores Baeumler’s decision to build a new home in the countryside and the problems it entails, and follows House of Bryan: On the Rocks.

    TV2 votes for talent shows

Hungary’s TV2 has renewed music talent series Master Class and The Voice for its primetime schedule, and is considering launching three spin-off cable channels.

The channel’s head of programming Peter Kiss commissioned a second season of Master Class Hungary after the show achieved 1.5 million viewers in its debut run earlier this year.

The show, distributed by Keshet International and coproduced by Hungary’s Show & Game and Media Center, sees children sing all-time classics with only positive reviews and no eliminations.

Meanwhile, a second season of The Voice, produced by MTG-controlled Paprika Latino and licensed by Talpa Distribution, has been commissioned for TV2′s sister channel Super TV2.

“Generally, music shows are working very well for us. Master Class has created such a buzz, especially though social media, and viewers like it because it’s a positive show about kids,” said Kiss.

He also revealed plans for a trio of TV2 spin-off cable channels over the next few years but declined to give further details at this stage.

“We have worked out on paper that we have three new channels. This is a programming plan that we would like to implement in the next three years,” said Kiss.

Master Class and The Voice will return in 2014, with exact dates yet to be confirmed.

    Liberty ties up Virgin deal

International cable operator Liberty Global has completed its acquisition of UK cable company Virgin Media, in a deal valued at £15bn (US$23.3bn).

    Tom Mockridge
The takeover, which was approved by the EU’s antitrust authority in April, means US cable group Liberty will become the UK’s second-biggest pay TV firm after BSkyB.

The merger was formally completed today, following shareholder approval, and comes on the same day that Tom Mockridge started work as Virgin Media’s new CEO.

The former News International chief executive is joined by former UPC Ireland MD Dana Strong, who has been appointed as the company chief operating officer. Robert Dunn, the former MD of Dutch cable operator UPC Netherlands, becomes the company’s new chief financial officer.

Mike Fries, president and CEO of Liberty Global, said: “Together, we now provide over 47 million video, voice and broadband services to 25 million customers located principally in 12 European countries.”

VU goes on view in fall

US broadcast network VU Television will debut in September, promising drama, comedy, reality and news programming.

The channel is from LA-based IC Punch Media and will debut in 15 US cities on September 23. It will also carry local news and movies, along with children’s programming in morning weekday and weekend time periods.

The company has brought in veteran TV syndicator and producer Gayle Dickie as president of IC Punch and VU Television. She will oversee the day-to-day operations of the firm’s multi-platform broadcast, cable and streaming channels.

Dickie, who previously worked at 20th Century Fox TV and Orion Pictures, has hired James Allen Bradley as exec VP of production and operations.

“The main differentiator for VU Television will be our local presence in each city,” said Steven Samblis, CEO of IC Punch Media. “While the majority of networks that have launched over the past few years have only been able to offer national cable programing, VU Television will tap into the power of our websites to enhance and attract more audience numbers.”

RDF takes on critics for C4

UK prodco RDF Television West has been given the go-ahead to produce a 15-part series about the world of restaurant and hotel critics for the UK’s Channel 4.

The 15x60′ series will be fronted by hotelier and broadcaster Ruth Watson, who will visit tourist attractions, accommodation and restaurants that have been the subject of negative reviews from online critics.

Judgement Day (working title) will then follow Watson as she brings the authors of the negative reviews together with the owners of the criticised establishment, as they discuss the problems and explore whether the negative comments were justified. Watson will return to the businesses several weeks later to discover if the issues have been resolved.

Channel 4’s commissioning editor David Sayer said: “Ruth, with her expertise and no-nonsense style, is the perfect person to decide who’s right and who’s wrong in the battle between businesses and their reviewers.”

RDF is a part of Zodiak Media and has previously produced Dickinson’s Real Deals (ITV) and Emergency Bikers (Channel 5). The firm has appointed Andrew Anderson as Judgement Day’s executive producer, with the show set to air later this year.

    Treehouse goes to Trucktown

    Trucktown
Corus Entertainment-owned Treehouse TV in Canada has picked up Trucktown, a preschool animated CGI series about the adventures of a group of young trucks.

Fellow Corus subsidiary Nelvana Studio has started production on the 40x30′ series, which is based on the Trucktown series of books by children’s author Jon Scieszka.

“The boisterous characters and rollicking action that Jon Scieszka created for the page have a proven track record that the series will be able to introduce to even more kids and families,” said Colin Bohm, MD of Nelvana. Trucktown is expected to air in spring 2014.

Intel moving forward to secure content for pay TV service

Blinkx launches dedicated app and player for Tizen mobile OS
Intel is reportedly offering a premium of up to 75% over standard cable rates to secure content for its planned pay TV service, but has yet to close a deal with any major content provider.

According to a Reuters report, citing unnamed sources familiar with the talks, Intel is offering considerably more than standard US cable rates to secure programming and has reached agreement over some aspects of how content would be distributed on its service with CBS, News Corp and Viacom.

The chipset giant is also in talks with Comcast-owned NBC Universal, but at a less advanced stage, according to Reuters.

According to the sources, Intel has upped its offer significantly since negotiations began and is offering a premium of between 50-75%. With its service yet to launch, Intel would expect to pay a premium per-subscriber rate to secure deals with the studios.

Intel has said it plans to provide a more flexible way of consuming content via its service. Head of media Erik Huggers told an AllThingsDigital event in February that he was confident the company would be in a position to launch a service this year.
