French network remakes German cop drama

A local version of German crime procedural The Last Cop is set to launch on French commercial channel TF1.

The local show, titled Falco, will debut on June 20 in a 8.50pm slot featuring TV star Sagamore Stévenin in the lead role as a tough police officer who wakes up to a different world after 20 years in a coma after sustaining injuries during a mission.

Beauborg Audiovisuel is attached to produce the series.

TF1 acquired the format rights from distributor Red Arrow International, the sales arm of ProSiebenSat.1 Group-owned Red Arrow Entertainment.

In Germany, The Last Cop (above) has run for four seasons with a fifth commissioned on German net Sat.1. Red Arrow claims it takes shares of up to 181% above the channel average.

Last month, US cable channel TNT revealed Sylvester Stallone was attached a US version, which Red Arrow-owned Fabrik Entertainment (fka Fuse Entertainment) and Fox Television Studios are producing.

Last Cop has also sold into the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and Ukraine.

“The Last Cop has been a smash hit in Germany for years. The idea of a macho cop who suddenly wakes up after 20 years in a coma and clashes with modern times – and methods – perfectly fits the worldwide retro trend. No doubt TF1 will do an excellent job at the remake of The Last Cop,” said Red Arrow International’s regional sales manager, France, Aline Avedikian.

Disney buys Wolfblood for global channels and new German service

Disney Channel has taken free and pay TV rights to hit live action kids series Wolfblood in Germany, the US and several other territories.

Disney is launching a free-to-air Disney Channel in Germany at the start of next year, in turn sparking changes at Super RTL, the FTA channel in which it is currently a joint venture partner.

It has picked up Wolfblood from ZDF Enterprises in a deal that gives it rights to the live-action series in Germany as well as in Italy, France, Russia, and the CEE, Benelux and Middle East regions. The deal also covers US rights to the series.

The show is a coproduction between ZDF and CBBC in the UK. The mystery adventure show follows ‘wolfbloods’, who are neither completely wolves nor completely humans, but can shift between the two forms at will. Season two is currently in production.

Ana Izquierdo Lowry, head of acquisitions, The Walt Disney Company, EMEA said: “We are thrilled to have secured the rights to the European-produced, live action drama for kids Wolfblood, which is set to roll out on Disney Channel across a selection of markets within EMEA, the US, Latin America and Russia.”

DirecTV will carry the channel in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. Sundance said it plans roll out a separate Portuguese-language service although did not specify timing.

Bringing Sundance Channel to Latin America builds on this vision.”

Intel ‘offering premium, but yet to secure content for TV service’

Intel is reportedly offering a premium of up to 75% over standard cable rates to secure content for its planned pay TV service, but has yet to close a deal with any major content provider.

According to a Reuters report, citing unnamed sources familiar with the talks, Intel is offering considerably more than standard US cable rates to secure programming and has reached agreement over some aspects of how content would be distributed on its service with CBS, News Corp and Viacom.

The chipset giant is also in talks with Comcast-owned NBCUniversal, but at a less advanced stage, according to Reuters.

According to the sources, Intel has upped its offer significantly since negotiations began and is offering a premium of between 50-75%. With its service yet to launch, Intel would expect to pay a premium per-subscriber rate to secure deals with the studios.

Intel has said it plans to provide a more flexible way of consuming content via its service. Head of media Erik Huggers told an AllThingsDigital event in February that he was confident the company would be in a position to launch a service this year.

Mark Burnett project launches new digital venture

Smokebomb Entertainment founders Daniel Dales and Jarrett Sherman have launched a new digital venture and have a deal in place for a project with Mark Burnett.

The pair exited Smokebomb last July four years after Canadian producer Shaftesbury Films acquired the company to become its digital arm.

They have now launched Digital Howard, which will focus on “creating and producing extraordinary 360 degree entertainment experiences for audiences on all platforms”. They will both act as executive producers on the firm’s projects.

The company will work with IP owners to expand their properties on to digital platforms from the initial stages of development onward.

The first project is Spin Off 360, on which Digital Howard is working with Mark Burnett’s joint venture firm One Three Media, Channel Zero-owned CHCH Television and Suddenly SeeMore… Productions.

Spin Off 360 will allow viewers to play along at home with the TV series Spin Off (above), a gameshow format that Burnett sold to CHCH in April, using a number of devices including tablets and mobiles. They will be able to use points accrued during the season to qualify for a digital tournament and win prizes and cash.

“We’ve assembled a talented team, and have already begun to put some exciting strategic partnerships in place. We couldn’t be happier to be coming out of the gate with Spin Off 360,” said Dales, Digital Howard’s co-founder and executive producer.

“Digital Howard is at the forefront of creating a real, vivid and compelling second screen experience for home viewers. We’re excited about the roll out of Spin Off 360 and can’t wait to have thousands of Canadians playing along at home,” added C. Scot Cru, senior VP of International Distribution & Production at One Three Media.

Digital Howard will make a series of announcement over new projects in coming months, the firm said. “We’ve already begun developing opportunities unique to the digital space and the pieces are falling into place,” said Sherman.

French doc firm scores VOD distribution deal

France-based doc distributor Java Films has hooked up with North American video-on-demand aggregator Syndicato.

The strategic deal will see Syndicato, which places VOD content on major online platforms such as Netflix and Amazon, taking Java-owned films such as Desert Riders (above), Sunday in Brazzaville and The Undocumented to Europe, Latin America and Asia.

“Digital is still relatively new and unproven for us. We’re happy to partner with Syndicado whose accessible approach and position with the major VOD outlets gives us and our filmmakers the exposure we need strategically, while still being cost effective for us in this emerging platform.” said Roch Bozino, managing director of Java Films.

“We’re delighted to start working with Java Films, who’s catalog and stable output of award winning and audience driven international documentaries gives our VOD outlet clients the depth to help them compete in the ongoing battle between devices, screens and traditional delivery,” added Syndicado president Greg Rubidge.

    TV2 votes for talent shows

Hungary’s TV2 has renewed music talent series Master Class and The Voice for its primetime schedule, and is considering launching three spin-off cable channels.

The channel’s head of programming Peter Kiss commissioned a second season of Master Class Hungary after the show achieved 1.5 million viewers in its debut run earlier this year.

The show, distributed by Keshet International and coproduced by Hungary’s Show & Game and Media Center, sees children sing all-time classics with only positive reviews and no eliminations.

Meanwhile, a second season of The Voice, produced by MTG-controlled Paprika Latino and licensed by Talpa Distribution, has been commissioned for TV2′s sister channel Super TV2.

“Generally, music shows are working very well for us. Master Class has created such a buzz, especially though social media, and viewers like it because it’s a positive show about kids,” said Kiss.

He also revealed plans for a trio of TV2 spin-off cable channels over the next few years but declined to give further details at this stage.

“We have worked out on paper that we have three new channels. This is a programming plan that we would like to implement in the next three years,” said Kiss.

Master Class and The Voice will return in 2014, with exact dates yet to be confirmed.

Canada’s Temple Street Productions has launched an original digital content studio in Toronto that will work with YouTube to develop a campus-like environment for online creators.

Boat Rocker Studios comes out recently-created division Temple Street Media Ventures and will be housed in a newly-acquired 1950′s era, 20,000 sqft Sackville Street building in the city’s downtown King Street East area.

“Temple Street was built on fostering strong relationships with writers and showrunners and providing them with the best creative and business environment possible,” said co-presidents David Fortier and Ivan Schneeberg, copresidents.

Boat Rockers is open for business immediately, offering to collaborate with online creators, help them gain business support and production expertise. However, the facility will undergo renovations throughout fall, opening its doors in the first quarter of 2014.

The news comes after the company last week set up digitally-focused Temple Street Media Ventures, promoting Michel Pratte to run it.
