    MTS figures disappoint
    June 10, 2013 06.04 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Russia’s MTS ended the first quarter with 2,885,000 subscribers to its pay-TV services, a 1.8% reduction of the total three months earlier.
Its broadband internet subscriber total was meanwhile 2,314,000 and described as “stable”, with both figures having been retrospectively restated due to reclassification of subscribers of acquired companies with those of MTS.
Total group revenues in Q1 amounted to R92.9 billion (€1.85 billion), just R1.8 billion more than a year earlier but R5.8 billion down on the total in Q4 2012.
Net income in Q1 stood at R13 billion, compared to R15.6 and R17 billion a year and three months earlier respectively and was impacted by a foreign currency loss of R1.5 billion.

Data Factory launches Confederations Cup TV stats tool
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 10-06-2013

Data Factory has launched a new tool for TV which offers an interactive data panel for the Confederations Cup, taking place in Brazil from Saturday 15 June.
The company is attempting to keep its leadership position in sport statistics with two versions of its new gamecast tool, one for web – HTML Infographic Centre – and one for broadcast – Gamecast Broadcast.
Both tools are designed for multiplatform services, being suitable for TV broadcast which, for example, shares space with interactive data, social TV and infographics. The product is more than a gamecast, offering live information about the matches and also being available for the final consumer as well as TV stations and websites. The application offers microsites, minute-by-minute live data, statistics, incidents, gamecast, pre and post-match infographics and comparative data of the teams and players, among other features.
"We are proud of creating this product because it brings new concepts to information technology for sport events," said Ernesto Cambursano, Data Factory CEO. "Our clients will have access to a lot of different data organised by importance and rarity level," he added.
Currently, Data Factory produces data content of sports for a variety of TV channels and websites in Latin America.

Over 1.5 million social TV users in Spain
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 10-06-2013
Social TV is on in increase in Spain: the number of users reached a peak in May, with 1.5 million unique users of TV social networks making almost eight million comments.
This is nearly one million more comments than in April, representing a 7.5% increase on the month and 57.6% more than the last year's average.
According to a report from Tuitele, which analyses social network audiences each month, there is clearly an increasing tendency for commenting on TV programmes while watching them.
Sporting events were, as usual, the most commented upon. The genre's various programmes received almost three million comments during May. The Football Cup final was the month's most commented on programme, with over 400,000 comments through Facebook and Twitter.
Ranking second was the Spanish version of Big Brother, which is still achieving large audiences in spite of being in its 14th season. The reality show had 72,000 unique users and 233,000 comments, with four of its episodes coming in the top ten of the most commented upon programmes.

    Xumanii plans smart TV app
    Michelle Clancy | 10-06-2013
Xumanii has begun implementing a production schedule for the Xumanii Smart TV App for TV manufacturers such as Samsung, Sony and LG.
Xumanii has developed proprietary technology capable of broadcasting live events in HD wirelessly from multiple cameras at events. "These apps will help propel the Xumanii platform in terms of content distribution across the globe and across all platforms available currently on any device worldwide. In other words, if it has a screen we will be able to bring you the broadcast there," said company founder and CEO Alexandre Frigon.
"The most popular feature of the smart TV is that it makes it possible for users to watch content from Hulu, Netflix, YouTube and other sources directly from the TV without the need for a set-top box or a computer connection," the company said. "In addition, the company has completed the initial stages of development for the PlayStation, Wii and Xbox consoles so that users will be able to watch live content broadcasted as desired. The apps will allow consumers the ability to utilise the full capabilities of the Xumanii platform including the ability to watch events...in the comfort of the user's living room."
The company anticipates the first Xumanii smart TV App will be available to the public in the next three to four months, after beta testing has been completed.
Frigon added: "All of the research for the development of these applications has been completed and we are now moving towards developing these apps. With more than 100 million smart TVs expected to be in homes worldwide by the end of this year we are confident that providing consumers with a live broadcast platform such as Xumanii will be a very beneficial addition to the company's content distribution and IP portfolio. We are confident that having this capability available to music and entertainment fans worldwide will also create an additional revenue stream that many other companies that stream content online have shown to generate."

    Michelle Clancy | 10-06-2013
Espial, which provides on-demand TV software and solutions, is showcasing applications that include electronic programming guides (EPG), video-on-demand (VOD) and access to popular Web applications, built on the Comcast Tru2way RDK solution.
The RDK from Comcast is a pre-integrated software bundle that creates a common framework for powering tru2way, IP, or hybrid STBs and gateway devices, accelerating the development and deployment of next-generation video services. Comcast licenses the RDK to OEMs, software integrators, SOCs, software vendors and video distributors to create a community of innovators focused on bringing rich, multiscreen TV home entertainment experiences to consumers faster.

Sundance takes DIRECTV route to Latin America’s pay-TV distribution
    Editor | 10-06-2013
The international division of AMC Networks, AMC/Sundance Channel Global, has inked a distribution deal with DIRECTV Latin America to launch Sundance Channel in the region.
From September 2013, Sundance Channel will be available for the first time in seven Latin American countries, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. On 15 July, leading up to the channel launch, the original series Rectify will have an exclusive premiere on DIRECTV Latin America's own entertainment network, OnDIRECTV. The series Mr. Selfridge will soon follow in an exclusive window.
The 24/7 Spanish-language linear network will feature a selection of first run original drama and other programming, plus locally appealing independent films and documentaries. It will be available to DIRECTV subscribers on the package, one of the operator’s most widely distributed tiers, and Sundance will also launch a separate Portuguese-language channel in Brazil at a later date.
Once established on DIRECTV Latin America’s platform, Sundance Channel will be made available for distribution to pay-TV operators across the region. Ed Palluth, EVP distribution, AMC/Sundance Channel Global, will oversee the channel’s further distribution throughout Latin America. Sundance Channel will be made available to pay-TV operators as a standard and high definition linear television (HDTV) channel, video-on-demand (VOD) service and via mobile and online-authenticated streaming.
Commenting on the launch, Robert Redford, founder of Sundance Channel, said: “It has long been my hope to see Sundance Channel expand globally to share the compelling stories of independent filmmakers and artists as widely as possible. Bringing Sundance Channel to Latin America builds on this vision.”
Added Bruce Churchill, president of DIRECTV Latin America: "We’re excited to be partnering with AMC Networks to be the first to introduce Sundance Channel in Latin America. We are committed to providing DIRECTV subscribers an unmatched offering of quality content, and Sundance Channel’s mix of independent films and acclaimed series fits perfectly with that goal.”

    Editor | 10-06-2013
Claiming to have benefited the wireless distribution of video content, set-top box and broadband gateways vendor Sagemcom has joined MoCA as an associate member.
MoCA is claimed by its membership as the worldwide technology standard for home entertainment networking, and they add that it is the only technology standard in use by cable, satellite and IPTV/telco. MoCA technology supports multiple streams of video-based content - including HDTV, 3DTV, gaming, and OTT - via an IP-over-coax connection to numerous in-home devices, including HDTVs, game consoles and PCs. Screen Australia invests AUD$1.4m in seven documentary projects
    Louise Duffy | 10-06-2013
Screen Australia is investing AUD$1.4 million in seven documentary projects through the Signature Documentary Program, generating almost AUD$3.5 million in production.
Approved projects include The Frackman, directed by Richard Todd and written by John Collee and Sarah Rossetti, which follows the adventures of an anti-coal seam gas campaigner and his filmmaker friend. The film is produced by Trish Lake, Simon Nasht and Richard Todd.
Producer/director Tom Zubrycki’s new documentary Back to Ground Zero has also been supported. It is a story about a Sudanese refugee living in Sydney who returns home to build a school in his village, which has been devastated by 29 years of civil war, and a group of Australian friends who help him in his quest.
Produced by Pat Fiske and directed by Amin Palangi, Love Marriage in Kabul follows the quest of an Afghan-Australian woman as she negotiates and challenges old traditions to make a love marriage happen in Kabul. The film is co-produced by Sanaz Fatouhi and Amin Palangi.
Filmed over eight years, Ordinary Wonderlands is the stranger-than-fiction story of the world’s first real-life superheroes, from writer/director Penny Vozniak and producer Karina Astrup.
From co-producer, writer and director Jeff Daniels and executive producer Jeni McMahon, Mother with a Gun follows the matriarch of a terrorist organisation who chooses to hang up her gun and walk away.
Screen Australia’s documentary manager Liz Stevens said: “These filmmakers have devoted a lot of time and creative energy to their projects before applying for funding and their stories are well developed and as strong as the characters they reveal. Screen Australia is pleased to be able to offer support through the prestigious Signature Documentary Program, which for the first time includes two web-based projects.”
Kim Jong-Il Interactive Cinema Experience (KJILCE) is an interactive journey through the world of North Korean cinema, which enables users to share and learn about the film methodology of Kim Jong–Il and make their own films. The project is produced by Dan Fill and Frank Verheggen and written by Anna Broinowski.
Transmedia - producers of the award-winning online documentary project Big stories, Small Towns, Anna Grieve and Martin Potter - will once again work with filmmakers and communities to produce inspiring local stories that are central to their lives and relevant to the world in Big Stories, Small Towns: Asia Pacific. Martin Potter is the creative director and Nick Crowther is the online producer of the project.
The Signature Documentary Program provides production funding for projects that are bold in form and content. The stories can be local or international but they must have an Australian team with a strong vision and the potential for national and international acclaim.
