LTE and smartphone uptake drives mobile video traffic growth
    Joseph O'Halloran | 03-06-2013
Driven by better network speeds, particularly the rollout of LTE-based 4G networks, mobile video traffic is growing by 60% annually according to the latest Ericsson Mobility Report.
The research found that video was the key driver in making mobile data traffic grow significantly in the coming years, with overall traffic expected to grow 12-fold by the end of 2018. Data traffic volumes were found to have doubled between Q1 2012 and Q1 2013. Video was found to make up the largest segment of data traffic in networks, and it is expected to grow around 60% annually up until the end of 2018. Video consumption is on average 2.6GB per subscription per month in some networks.
Ericsson added that increasing usage is driven by continual growth in the amount of content available as well as the improved network speeds that come with HSPA and LTE development. "LTE services will be available to about 60% of the world's population in 2018,” said Douglas Gilstrap, senior vice president and head of strategy at Ericsson. “We expect LTE subscriptions to exceed 1 billion in 2017, driven by more capable devices and demand for data-intensive services such as video. Owing to the build out of WCDMA/HSPA, network speeds have improved, and so has the user experience."
The communications giant added that aiding mobile uptake was a continued surge in smartphone adoption with total global smartphone subscriptions set to hit the 1.2 billion mark in 2012, and are due to reach 4.5 billion by the end of 2018. Smartphones accounted for around half of all mobile phone sales in Q1 2013, compared with roughly 40% for the whole of 2012.
The number of total mobile subscriptions grew by 8% globally year-on-year by Q1 2013. Of those, WCDMA/HSPA added around 60 million subscriptions, GSM/EDGE-only subscriptions grew by roughly 30 million, and LTE added around 20 million new subscriptions. Over this period mobile-broadband subscriptions grew at a rate of 45% year-on-year, reaching around 1.7 billion.

RT his billion views on YouTube
    Parent Category: News | 03-06-2013
Claiming to be the first news channel to hit such a milestone, Russia Today (RT) has revealed that it has notched up one billion views on YouTube.
The international news channel says that setting such a benchmark in online video performance confirms its status as the top news content provider on the world’s largest video-sharing platform.
Broadcasting 24/7 in English, Arabic and Spanish from its studios in Moscow and Washington, DC, RT is available to 630 million viewers worldwide, and in 2007 became the first Russian TV channel to launch a YouTube portal. Four years later it set the record for the most-watched YouTube news item of the year, and a 2012 study by the Pew Research Centre’s Project for Excellence in Journalism highlighted RT as being by far the largest provider of news video footage on the platform.
Explaining why he was “thrilled”’ that RT had reached the “massive landmark”, Robert Kyncl, Google VP and head of content for YouTube, said: “Programmers such as RT understanding that YouTube is different and that you have to program it slightly differently than the airwaves … the payoff is seen in RT’s “numbers; it’s paying off in consumer adoption and response rates ... It’s something that has to be both learned and earned and RT has been a great partner in that.”
"A billion hits – that's a stunning result. From RT’s very first days we knew that in the nearest future the battle for viewers will be taking place on the Internet, on new platforms. This is why we are especially proud and happy to be the first. This is an amazing achievement for a Russian news channel – to become a major provider of news in the space that reaches the most important, young audience," added RT’s editor in chief Margarita Simonyan.

    Michelle Clancy | 03-06-2013
NASA Television will provide live coverage in June of the launch and docking of the European Space Agency's (ESA) fourth Automated Transfer Vehicle cargo craft (ATV-4) to the International Space Station. It will also broadcast the departure of a Russian Progress resupply ship from the orbiting laboratory.
Loaded with more than seven tons of supplies for the space station crew, the 13-ton ATV-4 Albert Einstein spacecraft is scheduled to launch atop an Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou, French Guiana on 5 June. Launch coverage with commentary from NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston and ESA's launch provider, Arianespace, will begin at 5.15pm ET.
The ATV-4 is scheduled for a ten-day trip to the station. Docking to the aft port of the Russian Zvezda Service Module is scheduled for Saturday 15 June. NASA TV coverage of rendezvous and docking will begin at 8am, ahead of the planned docking at 9.46am.
Before the ATV-4 arrives at the station, the Russian ISS Progress 51 cargo spacecraft will undock from the Zvezda port. NASA TV coverage of the undocking will begin at 9.30am.
As the Progress cargo craft departs, the ship's external cameras will focus on navigational sensors on the Zvezda docking port to gather imagery and confirm the sensors were not damaged 26 April, when Progress docked to the station with one of its navigational antennas folded against its side.
