Further growth for Dutch broadband market
May 31, 2013 09.25 Europe/London By Broadband TV News Correspondent

The Dutch broadband market rose 0.6%, or by 37,400 net additions, in the first quarter to 6.65 million connections, according to Telecompaper’s quarterly broadband report.
DSL’s 1.1% quarterly decrease was offset by cable growing 1% during the quarter and FTTH/B growing almost 6%. DSL is still the largest broadband technology with 3.14 million lines, with cable catching up with 2.99 million lines. FTTH/B had a market share of 7.8 percent at the end of Q1. Telecompaper estimates that consumer broadband retail revenues lifted 3.4% in Q1 to EUR 478 million.
KPN, including its XS4ALL and Telfort brands, is still the largest broadband provider in the Netherlands with a 40.8% share of subscribers, stable compared with the previous quarter. Ziggo was number two with a market share of 26.6%, and UPC came third with 15.6% of broadband subscribers. For the remainder of the year, broadband connections are expected to grow by 2.6%, with cable and fibre growing fast enough to offset DSL’s expected continued decrease.

    ILS Proton to launch SES-6
    May 31, 2013 07.24 Europe/London By Robert Briel

The SES-6 satellite will be launched on Proton M launch vehicle from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, on June 3.
The launch will take place at 15.18 Baikonur time (9.18 GMT). A live website cast is available at a special website beginning at 9.00 GMT.
International Launch Services (ILS) is providing the launch services and has the exclusive rights to market the Proton vehicle.
The Proton M launch vehicle, utilizing a 5-burn Breeze M mission design, will lift off from Pad 39 at Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, with the SES-6 satellite on board. The first three stages of the Proton will use a standard ascent profile to place the orbital unit (Breeze M Upper Stage and the SES-6 satellite) into a sub-orbital trajectory.
From this point in the mission, the Breeze M will perform planned mission maneuvers to advance the orbital unit first to a circular parking orbit, then to an intermediate orbit, followed by a transfer orbit, and finally to a super-synchronous transfer orbit. Separation of the SES-6 satellite is scheduled to occur approximately 15 hours, 31 minutes after liftoff.
SES-6 will be the 53rd satellite in SES’ global fleet. The satellite is equipped with 43 C-band and 48 Ku-band transponders (36 MHz equivalent). It is a multipurpose satellite built by Astrium and will be replacing NSS-806 at 319.5 degrees East (or 40.5 degrees West) to provide capacity expansion over North America, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, and Atlantic Ocean region. The satellite’s expanded Ku-band payload will support DTH platforms, VSAT services and government digital inclusion programs throughout Latin America.

    MTV Ukraine rebrands
    May 31, 2013 07.20 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

MTV Ukraine is being rebranded and will change its name to ZOOM on June 1.
Although the channel, which is operated by Inter Media Group, will still target a young audience aged 14-32, instead of MTV Ukraine content it will broadcast music, world and national showbiz news, programmes about celebrities and various entertainment shows.
It will also use the advertising slogan “Be closer”.
According to Sergey Demyanchuk, head of niche channels at Inter Media Group, “For my generation the MTV brand was a significant phenomenon in the youth subculture for many years. But as the years pass by, audience preferences, music and TV trends change. And we have to admit that the MTV brand doesn’t work anymore in our country. As well as MTV Russia, it ceases to exist on June 1.
“Nevertheless, there is a need for the existence of a youth-oriented channel. Now this channel is called ZOOM, which we’re going to develop buying high-quality content from the world’s top TV producers and increasing the amount of programmes of our own production. Ukrainian viewers, from one side, and the domestic advertising market, from the other, are in need of having their own strong music TV brand. I’m sure, that ZOOM has all the chances to have a strong position in this niche and become closer and clearer to our audience”.

    May 31, 2013 11.51 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) has announced the launch of a new-look MTV Russia.
As of June 1, it will become fully owned and operated by the company for the first time in its 15-year history, having been previously operated as a joint venture. An HD version of the service will make its debut on October 1.
Commenting on the move, Lynn, executive VP and MD, VIMN UK, said: “By taking full editorial and management control of MTV, we aim to strengthen its presence in the Russian market, which is a global priority for Viacom.

Elena Balmont, general manager, VIMN Russia, added: “MTV has unrivalled insight into youth audiences around the world; we know young Russians have much the same interests as young people the world over and have the same desire to be part of a global youth culture. We’re confident that the new-look MTV Russia will be a destination of choice across multimedia for young Russians, in the same way as it is for young audiences elsewhere.”

    Larry King joins Russia Today
    May 31, 2013 10.54 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Larry King, the US interviewer who spent 25 years with CNN, is to join Russia Today (RT) to present a new political programme.
The Moscow-based international news channel will air Politics with Larry King and Larry King Now, which will be produced by Ora.tv, and recorded in RT America’s Washington studios,
“I have always been passionate about government and issues that impact the public, and I’m thrilled at the opportunity to talk politics with some of the most influential people in Washington and around the country,” says King.
Larry King Now – the name a nod to his CNN show Larry King Live – will continue to feature on Hulu TV in the United States, which has carried the programme since July 2012.
King’s arrival on the sometimes-controversial RT is not without precedent. Another seasoned interviewer, Sir David Frost, joined Al Jazeera English at launch in November 2006 after a long career in the UK and US.

BBC Trust rejects Apple iPlayer favouritism
    May 31, 2013 10.51 Europe/London By Julian Clover
The BBC’s governing body has rejected a complaint that development of new features and upgrades to the BBC iPlayer favoured Apple iOS over other platforms with a greater market share.
It had been argued that by failing to meet its commitment to deliver the iPlayer independently across all major platforms the BBC could be in breach of its on demand syndication policy.
The complaint was initially made to BBC Audience Services in 2011 and was taken to the BBC Trust in August. A lengthy correspondence with the complainant followed.
The complainant raised a number of specific issues, including that basic areas of iPlayer functionality, such as download, are not available on the Android platform; and a recent announcement that downloads would be available for smartphone and tablet users related only to Apple devices.
In its report the Trust said there was no evidence the BBC had unfairly favoured iOS when making development decisions and allocating resources. Developing for Android brought greater complexity and expense, and that the case put forward by the BBC Executive was persuasive.

YouView closes in on 400,000 homes
    May 31, 2013 11.27 Europe/London By Julian Clover

YouView has announced its first consolidated installation figures, putting the PSB/telco broadband project in almost 400,000 homes as of the end of March.
However, the platform has not separated the number of households that have acquired the DTT/broadband hybrid receivers through telco partners BT and TalkTalk with those who have made a purchase at retail.
Figures released in February showed TalkTalk to hold 80,000 YouView customers and BT 60,000. Both figures would have been expected to have significantly increased.
YouView has however given some colour to usage patterns for the on demand elements of the service with over 2.2 million video on demand (VOD) plays per week, and around 60% of customers viewing VOD programmes every week. On average viewers watch 7 programmes a week – more than three hours of content – an average length of 27 minutes.
Richard Halton, CEO YouView said, “We’ve had a great start and we’re delighted to have received such a positive response from consumers. We’re already the fastest growing TV service in the UK and now we can see that translating into viewing. Seamless access to content is at the heart of the YouView proposition and we are delighted to announce that internet channels are set to launch this summer as well as the extension of our app strategy to the Android platform. YouView is taking catch-up TV into the mainstream.”
Later this summer YouView will begin the streaming of linear channels from broadband, while in the next few weeks an Android version of its remote record app will be introduced.
